Solid, honest materials
White oak, black walnut, spun brass, and undyed wool. No veneers, no fillers — if it looks like oak all the way through, it is.
Handmade in Portland since 2012
Alder & Ash is a small workshop crafting lamps, ceramics, and textiles from solid white oak, spun brass, and undyed wool — finished by hand, numbered, and built to outlast trends.
Why it lasts
We make a small number of things and make them properly — every piece is solid, serviceable, and honest about what it’s made of.
White oak, black walnut, spun brass, and undyed wool. No veneers, no fillers — if it looks like oak all the way through, it is.
Twelve people, one workshop, zero outsourcing. Every piece is signed by the maker who finished it and dated on the base.
Standard parts and joints that can be reglued. If an Alder & Ash piece ever fails you, we mend it or replace the part, free.
The process
No warehouses, no mystery supply chains. Here’s exactly how a piece comes to you.
01
Pick from an edited collection of lamps, boards, mugs, and throws — each sized and finished for daily use, not for a photograph.
02
Your piece is cut, joined, and finished in our Portland workshop. Most ship in two to three weeks, with a note the day it leaves.
03
Delivery is on us, and so is the aftercare: every piece carries a lifetime repair promise and a small spare-parts kit.
From their homes
The pendant over our table has the exact warmth we spent years hunting for. Guests ask about it before they ask about the food.
Three years of daily use and the walnut board just looks better. You can feel the care in the grain every time you pick it up.
I chipped a bowl, emailed a photo, and a repair kit arrived that week — free. That’s why I keep coming back to this workshop.

Good questions
Most pieces ship in two to three weeks. Lamps and larger commissions take up to five, because we finish in small batches rather than rushing a queue. You’ll get a note the day yours goes into the crate.
Yes. If a piece fails from normal use, send it back and we’ll mend it or replace the part at no charge. Honest wear and tear we’ll fix for a fair, stated price — never a surprise on the invoice.
Hard-wax oil and food-safe lacquer, applied by hand in thin coats. No veneers and no plastic laminates — solid white oak, walnut, brass, and stoneware that can all be sanded and renewed for decades.
We release small runs — usually gone within days. Join the list and we’ll write to you the morning each one goes live.
