A Treasury of Glass & Gold

Nimbus carries the mosaic tradition of the Eastern Roman Empire into the present — hand-cut tesserae, gold-ground craftsmanship, and sacred geometry for the modern atelier.

The Craft

Three Pillars of the Atelier

The Imperial Archive

Fifty thousand catalogued tesserae recipes, workshop ledgers, and pigment folios from Ravenna to Constantinople — cross-referenced and searchable by any apprentice.

Tessellated Blueprints

Full-scale cartoons drawn to the square cubit, with smalti ratios, andamento guides, and setting-bed sequences recorded for every panel.

Gold-Leaf Certification

Every commission is verified to fourth-century standards — double gilding, mirror burnishing, and hermetic sealing beneath Venetian glass.

The Method

From Codex to Apse

  1. Consult the Codex

Period, palette, and provenance are fixed in the archive before a single cube of glass is cut.

  2. Compose the Tesserae

Our masters set smalti and stone line by line, following the cartoon as the panel slowly takes its sacred form.

  3. Gild & Seal

Gold leaf is laid by hand, burnished to a mirror, and sealed against six centuries of weather.

Testimony

Voices from the Workshop

Dr. Helena PalaiologinaConservator, Hagia Sophia Trust
The north tympanum Nimbus rendered holds a fidelity I have not seen outside the sixth century. Every cube respects its original setting line.
Marcus AureliosMaster Builder, Ravenna Works
The cartoon arrived full-scale, gold-ground, and true. Our apprentices read it like scripture, and the apse now sings.

Questions

From the Scriptorium

Are the tesserae historically sourced?

Our smalti comes from Murano furnaces whose lineage reaches the fifth century, and every batch ships with a sealed provenance record.

Can a panel survive outdoors?

Each work is bedded in lime mortar and sealed beneath borosilicate glass — rated, like the Ravenna facades, for six centuries of weather.

Do you restore existing mosaics?

Yes. Our conservators document, stabilize, and restore historic panels to fourth-century standards before any new commission is accepted.
