Chapter III · Voices from the Fair

What the Poets Are Singing

Thirty years I sang at country fairs for bread and small change’s share. Now my rhymes sail past the sea — the string grew longer than my dream.
João Batista Nogueira · Repente Poet, Recife
My students cut their first woodcuts with a mouse and swear a mestre taught the house. The ink went digital; the heart stayed analog.
Lúcia Mendes · Literature Teacher, Fortaleza

Frequently Sung Questions

What exactly is cordel?

Cordel is Brazilian folk literature: small rhymed booklets, illustrated with woodcuts and sold hung on strings — cordéis — at market stalls across the sertão. We kept the string; only the stall moved online.

Do I need to speak Portuguese?

Not at all. The workshop speaks English and welcomes every language. Portuguese rhyme is honored and preserved, but your verses may sing in any tongue — the meter tool follows wherever your stanza leads.

Can I print my booklets?

Yes. Poets export e-folhetos for the digital string, and Masters unlock print-ready PDFs with crop marks, sized for the traditional A5 hand-press binding — paper, string, and all.
