**Project:** "WARMING STRIPES — 1880→2025" — Complete Landing Page (Category: Data & Engineering)
**Role:** Act as a Senior Frontend Engineer and Expert UI Designer. Produce the complete, production-quality landing page in a single response, on the first attempt. All user-facing copy must be written in polished English. Tone: precise, engineering-credible, numbers-forward — the audience is data and engineering teams.

## 1. Project Brief & Design Direction

**1.1 Product Concept.** Build the marketing site for **"StripeSignal"** — a climate-data platform that turns the global temperature record (1880→2025) into a developer API, anomaly alerting, and embeddable visualizations. The iconic "warming stripes" (a full-bleed band of year-colored stripes, cold blues → hot reds) is the visual and interactive centerpiece of the page.

**1.2 Theme.** "WARMING STRIPES — 1880→2025" — 2020s contemporary, interactive/animated. Signature techniques: Flexbox, keyframe animations, transitions, transforms, gradients, box shadows, border radius, hover effects.

**1.3 Default Theme.** Light mode is the default and primary theme. **Exception clause:** although the source spec marks dark mode as inactive, dark mode support is mandatory (see Rule 2.3) — light is simply the default.

**1.4 Typography & Icons (Google only).** Load via Google Fonts `<link>` tags: **Space Grotesk** (display/headlines), **Inter** (body, bound to `--font-base`), **JetBrains Mono** (years, prices, stats, data readouts). Icons: **Google Material Symbols (Rounded)** via the icon font with ligature names. **Explicitly forbidden:** inline SVGs, local icon files, emoji-as-icons, any other icon set.

**1.5 No Raster Images.** All visuals are CSS gradients, Material Symbols, and initial-letter avatars. Do not reference external image files.

## 2. Strict Rules & Architecture

**2.1 CSS-First Architecture & Zero Inline CSS**
- All styling lives in `style.css`. **No `style="..."` attributes anywhere in the HTML.**
- Target everything via class/ID selectors. HTML stays semantic and style-agnostic.
- **Sanctioned runtime exception:** JavaScript may update CSS custom properties via `el.style.setProperty('--x', …)` for dynamic values (scrubber position, theme). This does not violate the no-inline-CSS rule, which forbids authored `style=""` attributes in markup.

**2.2 CSS Variables & Theme Tokens (all names mandatory)**
Define in `:root` (Light — default):

```css
--primary:#0d1117;        --on-primary:#fefefe;
--secondary:#ff8a5c;      --on-secondary:#0d1117;
--bg-primary:#f4f6fa;     --bg-secondary:#fefefe;   /* never #ffffff */
--text-primary:#0d1117;   --text-secondary:#5a6577;  --text-muted:#7a8699;
--text-success:#1a7f37;   --text-error:#c62828;
--border-default:#d8dee9; --border-error:#c62828;    --border-success:#1a7f37;
--accent-hot:#b2182b;
--radius-sm:8px; --radius-md:12px; --radius-lg:20px;
--shadow-sm:0 1px 2px rgba(13,17,23,.06); --shadow-md:0 8px 24px rgba(13,17,23,.10);
--spacing-gap:1.5rem;
--transition-fast:150ms; --transition-normal:300ms; --ease-standard:cubic-bezier(.4,0,.2,1);
--z-header:40; --z-dropdown:60; --z-modal:80; --z-toast:100;
--font-display:'Space Grotesk'; --font-base:'Inter'; --font-mono:'JetBrains Mono';
```

`.dark` overrides: `--primary:#d8dee9; --on-primary:#0d1117; --bg-primary:#0d1117; --bg-secondary:#161b24; --text-primary:#d8dee9; --text-secondary:#9aa7bb; --text-muted:#7a8699; --text-success:#57ab5a; --text-error:#f85149; --border-default:#2a3240; --border-error:#f85149; --border-success:#57ab5a;` plus deeper shadows.

- **Contrast pairing is enforced in both themes:** every background token pairs with its `--on-*`/`--text-*` counterpart. Never place `#ff8a5c` as small-text color on light backgrounds — use it only as a background with `#0d1117` text, as large display type, or as text on dark surfaces.
- Derived intermediate shades (hover tints, dark surfaces) are allowed if hue-consistent with the palette.

**2.3 Stripe Scale — Authorized Palette Exception.** The warming-stripes visualization requires a cold→hot diverging scale beyond the UI palette. Define and use these tokens **exclusively** inside the stripes gradient, scrubber marker, and data-viz accents: `--stripe-cold:#08306b; --stripe-blue:#2166ac; --stripe-cool:#4393c3; --stripe-pale:#92c5de; --stripe-ice:#d1e5f0; --stripe-neutral:#f7f7f7; --stripe-sand:#fddbc7; --stripe-warm:#ff8a5c; --stripe-ember:#d6604d; --stripe-hot:#b2182b; --stripe-deep:#67000d;`

**2.4 Mandatory Dark Mode**
- Implement via a single `.dark` class on `<html>` (single source of truth; no duplicate `@media` token blocks).
- Visible toggle in the header: Material Symbols `light_mode`/`dark_mode` (swapped via CSS), correct `aria-pressed` and `aria-label` ("Switch to dark theme" / "Switch to light theme").
- Persist via `localStorage`; first visit falls back to `prefers-color-scheme`. Apply the class in `script.js` (deferred) — a brief flash is acceptable; **do not add inline boot scripts**.

**2.5 Styling Approach.** Vanilla, hand-authored CSS in `style.css` (the spec's CSS Technical block mandates raw Flexbox/keyframes/gradients — no frameworks, no Tailwind). All reusable styles map to CSS variables and generic classes: `.btn`, `.card`, `.input-group`.

**2.6 Flexbox & Mobile-First**
- Build all layout with Flexbox. **Every flex container defaults to `align-items: center`** unless an exception is justified in a CSS comment (e.g., `stretch` for equal-height cards).
- Mobile-first: rows collapse to columns at breakpoints (640/768/1024px). No horizontal scrolling at any width ≥320px (guard with `min-width:0` on flex children; `overflow-x` never scrolls).

---

## 3. Component Design Specifications

**3.1 Buttons (`.btn` + BEM variants)**
- **Default:** `display:flex; align-items:center; justify-content:center; gap:0.5rem;` minimum 44×44px touch target. Variants: `.btn--primary` (background `--secondary`, text `--on-secondary`), `.btn--ghost` (transparent, `--border-default`, `--text-primary`), `.btn--ink` (background `--primary`, text `--on-primary`).
- **Hover:** brightness/shift + `cursor:pointer`. **Focus-visible:** distinct ring via `outline` + `offset` using theme variables. **Active:** `transform:scale(0.97)`.
- **Loading (`.is-loading`):** `pointer-events:none`, prevents double-submits, renders a CSS spinner (or spinning Material `progress_activity` icon) **without changing button dimensions**; set `aria-busy="true"`.
- **Disabled (`[disabled]`):** `opacity:0.5`, greyscale filter, `cursor:not-allowed`.
- **Success/Error (`.is-success` / `.is-error`):** temporary feedback driven by `--text-success` / `--text-error`, always icon + text — never color alone.

**3.2 Cards (`.card`)**
- **Default:** flex column, `--bg-secondary`, 1px `--border-default`, `--radius-md`, `--shadow-sm`.
- **Hover:** `transform:translateY(-2px)` + `--shadow-md`. **Focus-within:** accent border when a child link/button is focused.
- **Skeleton:** define a `.card--skeleton` shimmer keyframe utility in CSS for reuse (content is static on first paint, so it is not rendered by default). Empty-state pattern: not applicable (no async content) — do not invent one.

**3.3 Form & Input (Final-CTA email capture, `.input-group`)**
- Structure: flex column wrapping `<label>`, `<input type="email">`, and a dedicated `.input-group__error` container with `aria-live="polite"`.
- **States:** empty, `:focus` (outline ring), filled, `.is-valid` (success border + Material `check` icon), `.is-invalid` (error border, error icon, message text), disabled. Validate on submit and on blur; on success the button runs `.is-loading` (~1.2s) then `.is-success` with a confirmation announced via `aria-live`.

**3.4 Overlays.** None are requested. **Do not add modals, popups, cookie banners, or any unrequested overlay.**

---

## 4. Core UX & Micro-Interaction Rules

- **Responsive by default:** fluid `clamp()` typography (hero H1 ≈ `clamp(2.5rem, 6vw, 4.5rem)`); no overflow at any viewport.
- **Smooth animations:** `transition: var(--transition-normal)` on all state changes; keyframes for entrances.
- **`prefers-reduced-motion`:** disable keyframe entrances, scroll reveals, count-ups (render final values instantly), and marker transitions. Keep color/state changes.
- **Accessibility:** `<html lang="en">`, semantic landmarks (`header/nav/main/section[aria-labelledby]/footer`), skip link, logical heading hierarchy, full keyboard operability, visible focus everywhere, `aria-live` for dynamic feedback, contrast ≥4.5:1 in **both** themes, never color-only state.
- **Mandatory feedback:** every click/hover/focus triggers a visible change.
- **Destructive actions:** none in this build; if any `.btn-danger` were introduced it must be visually distinct in both themes.

## 5. Page Structure & Section Requirements

Global: sticky-header offset via `scroll-margin-top`; smooth anchor scrolling via CSS `scroll-behavior` (revert to `auto` under reduced motion); recurring motif — a 3px `aria-hidden` stripes-gradient divider under each section heading.

**5.1 Header.** Logo (Material `device_thermostat` in an accent rounded tile + "StripeSignal" wordmark), nav links (Features, How it works, Testimonials, Pricing, FAQ), theme toggle, "Get started" `.btn--primary`. Scrolled state (`.is-scrolled`) adds border + shadow. Mobile: hamburger (`menu` icon, `aria-expanded` + `aria-controls`) opens a flex-column panel; closes on Esc and on link click.

**5.2 Hero.** Eyebrow (mono, letter-spaced): "CLIMATE DATA PLATFORM". H1: "145 years of warming, engineered into your stack." Subhead explaining the API/alerts/embeds value proposition. CTAs: "Start free — no card required" (`.btn--primary`) + "Read the docs" (`.btn--ghost`). Stats row of three chips (mono numerals, count-up on reveal): "+1.29°C — 2024 anomaly vs 1951–80", "146 yrs — continuous record", "99.99% — API uptime". Staggered fade-up entrance keyframes.

**5.2.1 Signature Interaction — The Warming-Stripes Scrubber.** A full-width band (`clamp(120px, 22vh, 200px)` tall) below the hero copy:
- **Stripes:** a `linear-gradient(90deg, …)` authored in `style.css` from the `--stripe-*` scale with **≥25 stops** positioned to mirror the real record — blues dominating 0–30%, neutral mid-century plateau ~45–60%, accelerating warm/hot tones 60–100% with the hottest concentrated in the final 15%.
- **Entrance:** `scaleX` reveal keyframe (`transform-origin:left`). **Ambient:** a subtle looping opacity "heat pulse" overlay on the hot end (~7s cycle). Both disabled under reduced motion.
- **Interaction:** the band is `role="slider"`, `tabindex="0"`, `aria-label="Scrub the global temperature record, 1880 to 2025"`, `aria-valuemin="1880"`, `aria-valuemax="2025"`, with `aria-valuenow` and `aria-valuetext` (e.g., "1998 — anomaly +0.61 °C") updated by JS. Pointer move/drag maps x-position → year; `ArrowLeft/Right` ±1 year, `PageUp/PageDown` ±10, `Home/End` jump to extremes. A 2px marker line and a mono year/anomaly readout follow the pointer via a `--scrub-x` custom property; visible on hover and focus; `cursor:ew-resize`. Embed an approximate annual anomaly array (1880→2025) in `script.js` for the readout; the visible readout is `aria-hidden` (the slider's `aria-valuetext` carries the announcement).

**5.3 Features (3 cards).** Grid 1→3 columns. Each: Material icon in an accent-tinted tile, title, copy, "Learn more →" link (card highlights via `:focus-within`). Copy beats: (1) "One API for 146 years of data" — normalized HadCRUT5/ERA5/NOAA, REST + streaming; (2) "Anomaly alerts before the headlines" — ML baselines, webhooks/Slack; (3) "Embeddable stripes & charts" — drop-in, themable widgets.

**5.4 How It Works (3 steps).** Flex row → column. Mono numerals 01/02/03, icon, title, copy: **Connect** (API key + SDKs) → **Model** (queries + anomaly baselines) → **Ship** (embeds, webhooks, exports). Connector line (pseudo-element) animates `scaleX` when the section enters the viewport.

**5.5 Testimonials (3 cards).** Material `format_quote` icon, quote, avatar circle with initials on a stripes-scale gradient, name + role. Hover lift. Invent plausible, credible names/roles (e.g., Climate Data Lead at a grid-analytics firm; Staff Engineer; Research Director).

**5.6 Pricing (3 tiers).** Billing toggle (Monthly / Annual −20%) as a button with `aria-pressed`; price values wrapped in `aria-live="polite"` and updated with a quick fade. Tiers: **Researcher** $0, **Team** $49/mo ($39/mo annual) with an accent "Most popular" badge and elevated styling (accent border, `--shadow-md`), **Enterprise** "Custom". Feature lists with Material `check` icons. CTAs: Start free (ghost), Start 14-day trial (primary), Contact sales (ghost).

**5.7 FAQ (6 items).** Accordion: `<button aria-expanded aria-controls>` + panel `role="region"`; chevron rotates 180°; panels animate via `grid-template-rows: 0fr → 1fr`; first item open by default. Questions cover: data sources & baselines, update cadence, rate limits, commercial licensing of visualizations, exports/on-prem, cancellation. Hide collapsed panels **only** under a `.js` class on `<html>` so content remains readable with JS disabled.

**5.8 Final CTA.** Full-width band with `linear-gradient(120deg, #ff8a5c, #b2182b)`; content sits on a dark `--radius-lg` panel (`#0d1117` background, light text) to guarantee ≥4.5:1 contrast. Headline: "Put the planet's timeline in your product." Email capture per Rule 3.3; on success the form area is replaced by an icon + text confirmation.

**5.9 Footer.** Dark surface (`#0d1117` in light mode; raised dark surface in dark mode) with light text. Brand blurb + three link columns (Product, Resources, Company), legal row (© 2025 StripeSignal · Privacy · Terms · Status), Material icons (`mail`, `rss_feed`, `code`, `public`), and a decorative mini-stripes bar (`aria-hidden`). Links may target in-page anchors; purely external links may use `href="#"`.

## 6. JavaScript Requirements (`script.js`, deferred, progressive enhancement)

Theme init + toggle (Rule 2.4) · header scroll state · mobile menu · stripes scrubber with anomaly array (Rule 5.2.1) · IntersectionObserver scroll-reveal (`[data-reveal]` → `.is-visible`, staggered delays) · stat count-ups · pricing billing toggle · FAQ accordion · email form validation + simulated submit (loading → success). **The page must be fully readable and navigable with JavaScript disabled.**

---

## 7. Deliverables & Output Format

- **Files:** `index.html`, `style.css`, `script.js` — separate, complete files. Exactly one `<script src="script.js" defer>`; zero inline scripts; zero inline styles.
- **Naming:** BEM only (`block__element--modifier`), state classes as `.is-*` — one convention everywhere, never mixed.
- **Copy:** full, polished English copy built around the beats in Section 5. **No lorem ipsum.** No unrequested sections, placeholders, or overlays.
- **Self-verify before finishing:** no `style=""` attributes; both themes pass 4.5:1 text contrast; full keyboard walkthrough (nav → scrubber → FAQ → pricing toggle → form) works; no horizontal scroll at 320px; reduced-motion respected; every button has hover/focus/active/loading/disabled styles defined.
