## 1. STRICT RULES & ARCHITECTURE

### 1.1 CSS-First Architecture & Zero Inline CSS
- **No Inline CSS:** The `style="..."` attribute is forbidden anywhere in the HTML. Zero exceptions.
- **Class/ID Selectors Only:** All design properties, layout rules, and states must live in `style.css`, targeted via class or ID selectors.
- **Minimal HTML Modifications:** HTML must remain semantic and styling-agnostic. Changing the site's look must require editing only `style.css`, never the markup.

### 1.2 CSS Variables & Theme Tokens
Store every visual token in `:root` using the mandatory canonical names below, mapped onto the Daguerreotype palette. Keep the theme-specific supplementary tokens (vignette, gilt-edge, sepia, silver, plate shadows) alongside them. Never hardcode hex values outside the token blocks.

```css
:root {
  /* Mandatory canonical tokens — LIGHT (default) */
  --primary: #4a4238;        /* deep umber — primary actions */
  --secondary: #6b5a3f;      /* sepia — secondary actions, rules */
  --bg-primary: #d9d2c4;     /* aged paper-silver page ground */
  --bg-secondary: #eae5da;   /* plate surface / cards (near-white; never use #ffffff) */
  --text-primary: #2b2621;  /* near-black umber ink */
  --text-secondary: #5c5347;/* muted umber */
  --text-success: #45573a;   /* olive verdigris */
  --text-error: #7a2f26;    /* madder oxide red */
  --border-default: #6b5a3f;
  --border-success: #45573a;
  --border-error: #7a2f26;
  /* Theme-specific supplementary tokens */
  --accent: #8a6d3a;         /* gilt */
  --silver: #b8b2a0;
  --sepia: #6b5a3f;
  --surface-2: #c9c0ac;
  --vignette-gradient: radial-gradient(ellipse at center, transparent 40%, rgba(20,16,10,0.55) 100%);
  --gilt-edge: 0 0 0 3px #8a6d3a, 0 0 0 5px #d9d2c4;
  --shadow-vignette: inset 0 0 60px rgba(20,16,10,0.45);
  --shadow-plate: 0 6px 20px rgba(20,16,10,0.30);
  --blur-soft-focus: 6px;
  /* Radius / shadow / spacing / motion / elevation */
  --radius-sm: 4px; --radius-md: 10px; --radius-lg: 40px; --radius-pill: 999px;
  --shadow-sm: 0 2px 8px rgba(20,16,10,0.18);
  --shadow-md: 0 6px 20px rgba(20,16,10,0.30);
  --spacing-gap: 24px;
  --space-1: 4px; --space-2: 8px; --space-3: 12px; --space-4: 16px;
  --space-6: 24px; --space-8: 32px; --space-12: 48px; --space-16: 64px; --space-24: 96px;
  --transition-fast: 150ms; --transition-normal: 300ms;
  --ease-standard: cubic-bezier(0.4, 0.0, 0.2, 1);
  --z-dropdown: 100; --z-modal: 200; --z-toast: 300;
  /* Type */
  --font-base: 'Cormorant', 'EB Garamond', serif;
  --font-display: 'Playfair Display', 'Cormorant', serif;
  --font-mono: ui-monospace, monospace;
}
```

- **Contrast Pairing:** Every light background token must pair with a dark text token and vice versa — enforced in both themes, not only the default.
- **No Pure White:** The palette's `#eae5da` is the near-white surface. `#ffffff` must never appear.
- **Text Scale:** Use the provided `--text-xs` … `--text-5xl` scale; apply `clamp()` for fluid heading sizes.

### 1.3 Mandatory Dark Mode Support
The source specification does not declare color modes; therefore you must design, implement, and **validate both light and dark before considering the work complete.**

- **Implementation:** Define a full dark token set under a `.dark` class on `<html>` **and** duplicate it inside `@media (prefers-color-scheme: dark) { html:not(.light) { … } }` as a no-JS fallback.
- **Dark palette direction** (the plate's dark reverse — deep umber-charcoal ground, silvered highlights, brightened gilt):

```css
.dark {
  --primary: #cfc7b6;        /* silvered plate — inverted for contrast */
  --secondary: #8a7454;
  --bg-primary: #1b1813;
  --bg-secondary: #262019;
  --text-primary: #e8e2d4;
  --text-secondary: #a89e8c;
  --text-success: #a3b78d;
  --text-error: #d99184;
  --border-default: #4a4238;
  --border-success: #6d8257;
  --border-error: #a55a4e;
  --accent: #c9a86a;         /* brightened gilt */
  --silver: #8f897a;
  --sepia: #8a7454;
  --surface-2: #322b21;
  --vignette-gradient: radial-gradient(ellipse at center, transparent 40%, rgba(0,0,0,0.70) 100%);
  --gilt-edge: 0 0 0 3px #c9a86a, 0 0 0 5px #1b1813;
  --shadow-plate: 0 6px 20px rgba(0,0,0,0.55);
  --shadow-sm: 0 2px 8px rgba(0,0,0,0.40);
  --shadow-md: 0 6px 20px rgba(0,0,0,0.55);
}
```

- **Pairing flip:** In dark mode, `.btn--primary` (background `--primary: #cfc7b6`) must flip its text to deep umber `#221d17` to preserve the light-background/dark-text pairing.
- **Persistence:** Store the user's choice in `localStorage` (e.g., key `daguerreotype-theme`), falling back to `prefers-color-scheme` on first visit. Apply `.dark` / `.light` classes on `<html>`; theme switching must require zero HTML restructuring.
- **Toggle Control:** A visible toggle button in the nav with a Google Material Symbols icon (`dark_mode` / `light_mode`), correct `aria-pressed` and `aria-label` ("Switch to dark mode" / "Switch to light mode"), and a visible state change on activation.

### 1.4 Flexbox Layout & Mobile-First Alignment
- **Default Alignment Rule:** Every flex container defaults to `align-items: center` unless an exception is explicitly justified in CSS comments. Documented exceptions allowed: form input groups (`align-items: stretch`), footer link columns (`flex-start`).
- **Mobile-First:** Build all layouts as mobile-first flex columns, promoting to rows at breakpoints (e.g., `min-width: 768px` / `1024px`). Horizontal scrolling is forbidden at any viewport width.
- **Containers:** Max content width ~1100px, centered; section padding via `--space-*` tokens.

### 1.5 Styling Approach & Naming Convention
- **Clean Custom CSS:** The reference specification is hand-authored CSS — extend it; do not replace it. The provided base classes (`.nav`, `.btn`, `.btn--primary`, `.card`, `.input`, `.badge`) are the mandatory foundation. If you choose Tailwind instead, every utility must map back to these CSS variables and generic reusable class names.
- **BEM Only:** One consistent convention — BEM (`block__element--modifier`) — across the entire deliverable. Never mix conventions.

### 1.6 Typography & Icons (Google Fonts Mandatory)
- **Text Fonts:** Load via Google Fonts `<link>` with `preconnect`: **Cormorant** (body, weights 400/600/700 + italic), **Playfair Display** (display, 400/700/900 + italic), **EB Garamond** (fallback). Bind to `--font-base` / `--font-display`.
- **Icons:** Google Material Symbols (Outlined) via the official stylesheet. Usage: `<span class="material-symbols-outlined" aria-hidden="true">icon_name</span>`.
- **Forbidden:** Raw inline SVGs, local icon files, emoji-as-icons, icon fonts other than Material Symbols.

## 2. COMPONENT DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS

### 2.1 Button (`.btn`, `.btn--primary`, `.btn--ghost`)
- **Default:** `display: flex; align-items: center; justify-content: center; gap: 0.5rem;` — minimum touch target 44×44px; `transition: var(--transition-normal) var(--ease-standard)`.
- **Hover:** `transform: translateY(-1px)` + `box-shadow: var(--shadow-plate)`; `cursor: pointer`.
- **Focus:** `.btn:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid var(--accent); outline-offset: 3px; }` — never remove focus rings.
- **Active/Pressed:** `transform: scale(0.97)`.
- **Loading (`.btn--loading`):** `pointer-events: none` to prevent double-clicks; render a CSS-only spinner (border-based, using `currentColor`) without changing button dimensions.
- **Disabled:** `opacity: 0.5; filter: grayscale(0.6); cursor: not-allowed;` — no shadow, no transform.
- **Success/Error (`.btn--success`, `.btn--error`):** Temporary feedback states driven by `--text-success` / `--text-error` and matching border tokens; never color-only — pair with an icon or text change.

### 2.2 Card (`.card` and variants)
- **Default:** Flexbox layout, `background: var(--bg-secondary)`, `box-shadow: var(--gilt-edge), var(--shadow-plate)`, `border-radius: var(--radius-md)`, and the signature `::after` vignette overlay (`--vignette-gradient`, `pointer-events: none`).
- **Hover:** `transform: translateY(-2px)` + shadow shift to `--shadow-md`.
- **Focus-within:** Card border/edge highlights when a child link or button receives focus.
- **Skeleton (`.card--skeleton`):** Shimmer animation (gradient sweep) defined in CSS to prevent layout jumps; respects `prefers-reduced-motion`.
- **Empty (`.card--empty`):** Centered fallback layout — one Material Symbol icon + short guidance text.

### 2.3 Form & Input (`.input-group`, `.input`)
- **Structure:** Flex container wrapping `<label>`, `<input class="input">`, and a dedicated error/feedback container `.input-group__feedback` with `aria-live="polite"`.
- **States — all required:** Empty; Focused (`border-color: var(--accent)` + `box-shadow: 0 0 0 2px rgba(138,109,58,0.35)` ring); Filled; Valid (`.input--valid`: success border + check icon); Invalid (`.input--invalid`: error border, `--text-error` message, error icon); Disabled; Read-only.
- **Never color-only:** Validation always pairs color with an icon and text message.

### 2.4 FAQ Accordion (`.faq__item`, `.faq__trigger`, `.faq__panel`)
- **Trigger:** Full-width `<button>` — flex, `align-items: center`, `justify-content: space-between`, Material Symbol `expand_more` that rotates 180° on open.
- **A11y:** `aria-expanded`, `aria-controls`, panel with `role="region"` + `aria-labelledby`; fully keyboard operable; open/close animated via `max-height`/opacity transition (`var(--transition-normal)`).
- **Feedback:** Only one panel open at a time is permitted; every toggle produces a visible state change.

### 2.5 Layered Components
- **No modal is required.** If you introduce any dialog, it must use `--z-modal`, a backdrop, a Material Symbol close button, focus trapping, `Esc`/overlay-click closing, and CSS-animated open/close states. The sticky header must use `--z-dropdown`.

---

## 3. CORE UX & MICRO-INTERACTION RULES

- **Responsive by Default:** Fluid `clamp()` typography, flex wrap/column fallbacks, zero horizontal overflow at 320px+.
- **Smooth, Quiet Animations:** All state changes use `transition: var(--transition-normal) var(--ease-standard)`. Motion character is **slow, dignified, still** — gentle fades and lifts ≤ 4px only. No bounce, elastic, parallax, or autoplaying motion. Honor `prefers-reduced-motion: reduce` by disabling transforms, shimmer, and spinners.
- **Accessibility:** WCAG contrast ≥ 4.5:1 body text, ≥ 3:1 large text/UI in **both** modes. Semantic HTML5 landmarks (`header`, `nav`, `main`, `section`, `footer`), one `h1`, logical heading order, skip-to-content link, logical focus order, full keyboard operability, `aria-live` regions for all dynamic feedback.
- **Mandatory Visual Feedback:** Every click, hover, focus, and submission triggers a visible state change.
- **Destructive Actions:** None are present in this build; if any cancel/decline action is added, it must use a distinct `.btn--danger` style readable in both themes.
- **Aesthetic Forbiddances:** Absolutely no grain, noise overlays, scratches, dust, scanlines, flicker, or VHS/CRT artifacts anywhere. The surface is clean, silvery, and still.

---

## 4. DELIVERABLE & OUTPUT FORMAT

- **Files:** Three separate files — `index.html`, `style.css`, `script.js`. A single `<script src="script.js" defer></script>` reference in the head; no inline `<script>` blocks, no inline styles.
- **Naming:** BEM throughout, consistent across all three files.
- **Copy:** All user-facing copy in English, written for a Cultural & Heritage audience — formal, reverent, quietly confident, evoking an 1850s photographic studio's prospectus while remaining clear to modern readers. No lorem ipsum.
- **Placeholders:** Only for genuinely unspecified link destinations (e.g., footer legal links may use `href="#"` with real descriptive labels).

---

## 5. THEME DIRECTION — "DAGUERREOTYPE" (1839–1860s)

- **Mood:** Southworth & Hawes studio portraits; early 1840s American daguerreotype cases. Quiet, formal stillness.
- **Signature motifs:** Silvery monochrome tonal range with warm sepia-silver undertone; soft vignette falloff darkening toward edges (hero, final CTA, and every card's `::after`); oval and gilt-edge framing around portraits and cards (`--gilt-edge`, `--radius-lg` ovals); occasional `--blur-soft-focus` halos on decorative plate elements, used sparingly.
- **Portraits:** Render all "photographic plates" as pure CSS compositions — oval frames (`border-radius: 50%`) filled with layered radial/linear gradients in `--silver`, `--sepia`, and `--surface-2` tones, ringed by gilt edges. No external image files, no inline SVG.
- **Ornament:** Thin sepia rule lines, small-caps letter-spaced labels ("PLATE I", "EST. 1845"), gilt badges via `.badge`.

## 6. LANDING PAGE BUILD SPECIFICATION — SECTION BY SECTION

### 6.1 Header / Nav (`.nav`, sticky)
Flex, `align-items: center`, `background: var(--bg-secondary)`, `border-bottom: 1px solid var(--sepia)`, `z-index: var(--z-dropdown)`. Contains: brand wordmark in `--font-display` ("The Silver Plate Studio — Photographic Artists & Archivists, Est. 1845" or a refined equivalent of your authorship), anchor links (Features, Process, Testimonials, Pricing, FAQ), the theme toggle (2.5 spec), and a `.btn--primary` "Book a Sitting". On mobile, links collapse behind an accessible toggle button (Material Symbol `menu`/`close`, `aria-expanded`).

### 6.2 Hero
Full-width section, `min-height: 85vh`, flex-centered, with the `--vignette-gradient` overlay. A `.badge` ("The Daguerrean Manner · Est. 1845"), an `h1` in `--font-display` (e.g., "The Likeness, Held Still."), a muted subheadline in `--text-secondary`, and two CTAs (`.btn--primary` "Book a Sitting" → anchors to Final CTA; `.btn` "View the Process" → anchors to How It Works). Beside or above the copy: a large CSS-only oval gilt-framed plate portrait (Section 5). Slow fade-and-rise entrance (600ms), disabled under reduced motion.

### 6.3 Features — 3 Cards
Section heading + three `.card` components (flex row → column on mobile): **Artisanal Plate Portraits** (icon `photo_camera`), **Archival Restoration** (icon `history_edu`), **Museum-Grade Preservation Cases** (icon `museum`). Each card: gilt-ringed circular icon, `--font-display` title, one refined English paragraph. Apply the full card state set from 2.2.

### 6.4 How It Works — 3 Steps
Three steps labeled "Plate I / Plate II / Plate III" in small-caps gilt: **The Sitting** (pose and stillness, `schedule`), **The Plate** (polish, sensitization, exposure — described poetically, `auto_awesome`), **The Case & Delivery** (gilt mat, velvet pad, heirloom case, `inventory_2`). Desktop: horizontal flex with a thin sepia connecting rule; mobile: vertical column.

### 6.5 Testimonials
Three `.card` variants styled as daguerrean portrait cases: CSS-only oval plate "portrait" at top, italic Cormorant quote, patron attribution in small caps (e.g., "Mrs. Eleanor H. Whitcombe — Boston, 1852"; "The Hon. James A. Fairweather — Merchant, Philadelphia, 1854"; "Miss Cordelia Ashworth — Authoress, 1856"). Flex row → column.

### 6.6 Pricing — 3 Tiers
Three cards: **The Cabinet Card** ($180), **The Full Plate** (featured, $420, `.badge` "Most Favored", strengthened gilt edge and slight elevation), **The Imperial Plate** ($950). Each: tier name in `--font-display`, price, feature list with Material Symbol `check` icons, and a CTA (`.btn--primary` on the featured tier, `.btn` elsewhere). Every plan button anchors to the Final CTA form.

### 6.7 FAQ
Accordion per spec 2.4 — five questions covering: what a daguerrean-style portrait is; sitting duration; care and handling of plates; whether the studio travels to patrons; restoration turnaround. Real English answers, 2–3 sentences each.

### 6.8 Final CTA
Centered flex section with `--vignette-gradient` background, `h2` ("Sit for the Plate."), and the appointment form per spec 2.3: email `.input` + `.btn--primary` "Request a Sitting". On submit: button enters `.btn--loading`, then success (`.btn--success` + `aria-live` message: "Your request has been received. The studio shall reply within two days.") or invalid state (error icon + `--text-error` message in the live region).

### 6.9 Footer
`background: var(--bg-secondary)`, top sepia border. Flex layout → column on mobile: brand block (wordmark + one-line studio description), then three secondary link groups — **The Studio** (About, Our Process, Visit), **Collections** (Portraits, Restorations, Cases), **Information** (Care & Handling, FAQ, Terms, Privacy). Links underline on hover/focus. Bottom bar: "© <current year> The Silver Plate Studio — All likenesses preserved."

---

## 7. JAVASCRIPT REQUIREMENTS (`script.js`, vanilla, deferred)

1. **Theme controller:** read `localStorage` → else `prefers-color-scheme` → apply `.dark`/`.light` on `<html>`; toggle updates `aria-pressed`, `aria-label`, and the Material Symbol icon.
2. **FAQ accordion:** toggle `aria-expanded` and panel visibility.
3. **Form handler:** prevent default, validate email format, drive loading → success/error states and `aria-live` feedback.
4. **Smooth anchor scrolling** (disabled under `prefers-reduced-motion`) and mobile nav toggle.
5. **Footer year injection.** Nothing else — no libraries, no behavioral code beyond the above.

---

## 8. PRE-PUBLICATION VALIDATION CHECKLIST (must pass before finishing)

- Zero `style="..."` attributes; zero inline `<script>`; zero inline SVGs.
- Dark mode fully designed, toggleable, persisted, and contrast-validated alongside light mode (source declared no modes — you must verify both).
- Full keyboard pass: skip link, focus rings visible everywhere, accordion and nav operable without a mouse.
- `prefers-reduced-motion` honored; no horizontal scroll from 320px upward; all 44px touch targets met.
- Every component state in Sections 2.1–2.4 is present in `style.css`; every interaction produces visible feedback; no grain/scratch/CRT artifacts anywhere.
