## 1. Design Direction & Theme Tokens

**1.1 Visual Language — Strict Flat Design**
* No gradients, no decorative shadows, no decorative borders, no skeuomorphism. Depth and interactivity are communicated exclusively through solid color shifts.
* Apply: clean grid layouts for articles, highly legible sans-serif typography, simple category icons, flat-style article cover images, color-feedback article highlight micro-interactions, fast direct transitions (nothing exceeds 0.3s).
* Article cover images must be built as flat CSS color blocks (palette colors) containing a large Google Material Symbols category icon — no external image files, no photographs.
* **Shadow Exception:** The source spec demands `box-shadow: none`. Define `--shadow-sm` and `--shadow-md` tokens but resolve both to `none`; all hover/elevation feedback must be flat color shifts (background change, accent-bar reveal, underline reveal). Functional focus indicators remain mandatory and must use `outline`, never `box-shadow`.
* **Border Exception:** `border: none` applies to decorative surfaces only; functional borders (form inputs, dividers, focus outlines) are permitted via `--border-default`.
* **Background Exception:** The source spec lists `#FFFFFF` as primary; per mandatory architecture the page background token must be `#fefefe` — pure `#FFFFFF` may be used only for card/surface fills.
* **Grid Exception:** Flexbox is the default layout system; CSS Grid is permitted only for the multi-column article card grids (`.article-grid-flat`) where a 2D grid is semantically required.

**1.2 Color Tokens (all in `:root`)**
* `--primary: #001F3F` (Navy Blue — brand, primary CTAs, header, featured pricing tier)
* `--secondary: #FF8C00` (Vibrant Orange — accent highlights)
* `--accent-yellow: #FFD700` — decorative only, never as text on light backgrounds; when used as a badge fill, pair with `#333333` text
* `--accent-green: #2ECC40` — decorative/category accent only
* `--bg-primary: #fefefe` (page background) · `--bg-secondary: #F5F5F5` (Light Gray — alternating sections, hover surfaces)
* `--text-primary: #333333` · `--text-secondary: #555555` (derived neutral for secondary copy)
* `--text-success: #1F8A2D` (darkened emerald for AA contrast; raw `#2ECC40` stays decorative) · `--text-error: #CC0000` (Alert Red)
* `--border-default: #E0E0E0` · `--border-error: #CC0000` · `--border-success: #1F8A2D`
* `--radius-sm: 2px` · `--radius-md: 4px` · `--radius-lg: 8px` (use sparingly — flat aesthetic)
* `--shadow-sm: none` · `--shadow-md: none`
* `--spacing-gap: 1.5rem` (baseline of a consistent spacing scale)
* `--transition-fast: 0.15s ease-in-out` · `--transition-normal: 0.2s ease-in-out` · `--ease-standard: ease-in-out` (matches the spec's 0.2s ease-in-out; transition explicit properties like `background-color`, `color`, `transform` — never `transition: all`)
* `--z-dropdown: 100` · `--z-modal: 200` · `--z-toast: 300`
* Contrast pairing is mandatory in every theme: light background tokens pair with dark text tokens and vice versa.

**1.3 Typography & Icons**
* Google Font: **Roboto** (weights 400, 500, 700) via `<link>` or `@import`, bound to `--font-base: 'Roboto', sans-serif`. Body `line-height: 1.6`; headings 1.2–1.3; minimum body size 16px.
* Icons: **Google Material Symbols (Outlined)** only. Forbidden: raw inline SVGs, local icon files, emoji-as-icons. Category set: `globe` (World), `business_center` (Business), `science` (Tech & Science), `sports_soccer` (Sports), `palette` (Culture), `insights` (Data); plus `check` (pricing lists), `chevron_down` (FAQ), `arrow_forward` (CTAs), `newspaper` (logo), `menu` (mobile nav).

**1.4 Dark Mode Exception**
The source specification marks dark mode as unsupported ("Light: Full / Dark: No"); dark mode remains mandatory per architecture — ship the light flat theme as the default and primary experience, and additionally implement a fully tokenized dark theme (navy-based: `--bg-primary: #001226`, `--bg-secondary: #00284F`, `--text-primary: #F5F5F5`, `--text-secondary: #C9D4E0`, with interactive fills lightened or inverted to white-fill/navy-text so contrast pairing is preserved).

## 2. Strict Rules & Architecture

**2.1 CSS-First Architecture & Zero Inline CSS**
* All styling lives in `style.css`. The `style="..."` attribute is forbidden anywhere in the HTML.
* Target all design properties, layout rules, and states via class/ID selectors only.
* HTML must remain clean, semantic, and styling-agnostic — changing the site's look must require editing only `style.css`, never the markup.

**2.2 CSS Variables & Theme Tokens**
* Every visual token lives in `:root` per Section 1.2; dark overrides defined under both `@media (prefers-color-scheme: dark)` and a `.dark` class selector.
* Theme switching must never require HTML restructuring.

**2.3 Mandatory Dark Mode & Persistence**
* Provide a visible theme toggle in the header with correct `aria-pressed` and a descriptive `aria-label` that updates with state.
* Persist the user's choice in `localStorage`; fall back to `prefers-color-scheme` on first visit; apply the theme before first paint to prevent flash.

**2.4 Flexbox Layout & Mobile-First Alignment**
* Every flex container defaults to `align-items: center` unless an exception is explicitly justified (note it in a CSS comment).
* All rows collapse to columns on small viewports; zero horizontal scrolling at any width; minimum touch target 44x44px.

**2.5 Framework Default**
* Use **Tailwind CSS** (CDN or build) with component classes defined via `@layer` / `@apply`. All utilities must map back to CSS variables. Required generic reusable classes: `.btn`, `.card`, `.input-group`. Required theme classes, used in the markup: `.article-grid-flat`, `.category-icon-simple`, `.news-card-flat`.

**2.6 Fonts & Icons**
* Google Fonts (Roboto) and Google Material Symbols only, per 1.3. No other font or icon sources.

## 3. Page Sections & Component Specifications

Build the sections below in this exact order inside `<main>`, wrapped by a sticky header and the footer. Brand the platform with a fitting English name (suggested: **"ClearPost"**).

**3.0 Header (page shell)**
* Skip-to-content link; wordmark logo with `newspaper` icon; nav links (Features, How It Works, Pricing, FAQ) with smooth-scroll anchor navigation; theme toggle (2.3); "Subscribe" `.btn-primary`.
* Mobile: nav collapses behind a `menu` icon toggling a flex-column panel; toggle carries `aria-expanded`; fully keyboard operable.

**3.1 Hero**
* Headline + subheadline stating the news-platform value proposition; primary CTA ("Start Reading Free") and secondary ghost CTA ("Browse Topics"); trust line (e.g., "Trusted by 50,000+ daily readers").
* Include a 3-card `.article-grid-flat` preview: each `.news-card-flat` shows a flat color-block cover (palette color + large category icon), category label, article headline, and meta (author · read time). These cards must demonstrate the color-feedback hover micro-interaction.

**3.2 Features (3 cards)**
* Three `.news-card-flat` cards, each with a `.category-icon-simple`, title, and description (e.g., "Curated Daily Briefings", "Smart Topic Filters", "Ad-Free Reading").
* Section uses the alternating `--bg-secondary` background.

**3.3 How It Works (3 steps)**
* Steps numbered 01 / 02 / 03, each with an icon, title, and description (e.g., Pick your topics → Get a clean daily briefing → Read ad-free, anywhere).
* Flat accent bar or connector between steps; stacks vertically on mobile.

**3.4 Testimonials**
* Three flat quote cards: quote text, flat colored avatar circle with initials (CSS only, no external images), name, role, and publication.
* Hover applies the same flat color-feedback treatment.

**3.5 Pricing (3 tiers)**
* Tiers: Reader (Free), Pro (featured), Newsroom. Three columns → single column on mobile.
* Featured tier: `--primary` navy fill with white text (contrast pairing) and a "Most Popular" badge (`#FFD700` background, `#333333` text); it must remain distinct in dark mode.
* Feature lists use `check` Material icons; each tier's CTA implements the full button state set (3.9); include a billing note.

**3.6 FAQ**
* 5–6 real Q&As as an accessible accordion: native `<details>/<summary>` styled flat, or ARIA `button` + `region` with `aria-expanded` / `aria-controls`.
* `chevron_down` icon rotates 180° on open; smooth 0.2s height animation; keyboard operable; no modal.

**3.7 Final CTA**
* Full-width navy band (`--primary` background, light text) with a headline and an inline email signup `.input-group`: visible `<label>`, email input, dedicated error/feedback container, submit button.
* States: empty, focused (outline ring), filled, valid (success border + `check_circle` icon + polite live message), invalid (`--border-error`, `#CC0000` message, `error` icon, `aria-live="polite"`), disabled, loading (button spinner, double submits prevented), success (button switches to success state + confirmation). No page reload.

**3.8 Footer with secondary links**
* Four link columns (Product, Company, Resources, Legal), social icons (Material Symbols), copyright with dynamic year via JS, back-to-top link.
* All links show underline/color hover feedback.

**3.9 Button States (`.btn`, variants `-primary`, `-secondary`, `-ghost`, `-danger`)**
* **Default:** `display: flex; align-items: center; justify-content: center; gap: 0.5rem;` minimum 44x44px; flat solid fill; no shadow.
* **Hover:** flat color shift (e.g., navy `#001F3F` → `#003366`) + `cursor: pointer`.
* **Focus:** distinct 2px `outline` using theme tokens with 2px offset, visible in both light and dark modes; never `outline: none` without a replacement indicator.
* **Active/Pressed:** `transform: scale(0.97)`.
* **Loading:** interactions disabled, CSS spinner (border-based) or animated Material icon, button dimensions unchanged.
* **Disabled:** `opacity: 0.5`, grayscale, `cursor: not-allowed`.
* **Success/Error:** temporary flat feedback driven by `--text-success` / `--text-error`.
* `.btn-danger` (Alert Red base) must be visually distinct in both themes.

**3.10 Card States (`.news-card-flat`, `.card`)**
* **Default:** flat surface, flex layout, `--radius-md`, no shadow.
* **Hover:** mandatory color feedback (background shift to `--bg-secondary` and/or category accent-bar reveal); optional `transform: translateY(-2px)`.
* **Focus-within:** accent outline on the card when a child link/button receives focus.
* **Loading:** flat skeleton shimmer animation defined in CSS, causing no layout shift.
* **Empty state:** structured fallback with a Material icon and clear guidance text.

**3.11 Form & Input States (`.input-group`)**
* Account for: empty, focused, filled, valid (success border/icon), invalid (error border, `#CC0000` text, error icon), disabled, read-only.
* Structure: flex container wrapping a `<label>`, the input, and a dedicated error feedback container wired to `aria-live`.

**3.12 Modal**
* No modal is required for this landing page; do not introduce overlay or popup components.

## 4. Core UX & Micro-Interaction Rules

* **Responsive by default:** fluid type and spacing, standard breakpoints, zero horizontal overflow.
* **Smooth, fast animations:** every state change uses `transition: var(--transition-normal)` on explicit properties; fully respect `prefers-reduced-motion` (disable transforms, shimmer, and smooth scrolling).
* **Accessibility (a11y):** WCAG AA contrast in both themes; never rely on color alone to communicate state (pair color with icon or text); semantic HTML5 elements; correct ARIA roles/labels on custom widgets; logical DOM/focus order; complete keyboard operability with no mouse-only interactions; `aria-live` regions for form errors, loading states, and dynamic feedback.
* **Mandatory visual feedback:** every click, hover, and submission triggers a visible state change.
* **Fast direct transitions:** no animation exceeds 0.3s; header nav uses smooth-scroll anchor navigation.

---

## 5. Deliverable & Output Format

* **File structure:** separate `index.html`, `style.css`, and `script.js`. A single deferred entry point (`<script src="script.js" defer>`); no inline `<script>` blocks; no inline styles.
* **Naming convention:** one consistent BEM convention across the entire deliverable — blocks `.news-card-flat`, `.article-grid-flat`, `.category-icon-simple`, `.btn`, `.input-group`, with `__element` and `--modifier` patterns; never mix conventions.
* **JavaScript scope (minimal, unobtrusive):** theme toggle + persistence, mobile nav toggle, FAQ open/close animation (if not native `<details>`), newsletter validation/feedback, dynamic copyright year. Nothing else.
* **Copy:** real, meaningful English copy for a news platform throughout — no lorem ipsum and no placeholder text where content is specified.
* Generate the complete, production-ready code in one response, on the first attempt.
