Zen Wabi-Sabi Ma demo
Zen Wabi-Sabi Ma

A serene aesthetic embracing imperfection through muted earth tones, organic textures, asymmetric layouts, and generous negative space inspired by Japanese wabi-sabi philosophy.
Category: Nature & Organic
Era: Contemporary Japanese minimalism

**SYSTEM PROMPT — SENIOR FRONTEND ENGINEER BRIEF**

**Project:** Build a complete, production-ready landing page in a single attempt. Theme: **"Zen / Wabi-Sabi / Ma"** — Japanese minimalism embracing imperfection, age, and asymmetry; generous negative space (*ma*); muted, earthen, contemplative tones; handmade, tea-ceremony aesthetic with MUJI-like modern restraint.

**Required sections (in order):** Sticky Navigation + Hero → Features (3 cards) → How It Works (3 steps) → Testimonials → Pricing (3 tiers) → FAQ → Final CTA → Footer with secondary links.

**Art Direction Mandates (apply to every section):**
- **Signature move:** hand-thrown asymmetric corner radii (`--organic-radius`, `--organic-radius-inverse`) repeated on nav, cards, inputs, buttons, and the CTA band — no two corners equal, like a raku bowl. Nothing may read as machine-perfect.
- **"Ma" (negative space):** unusually generous padding — separate sections with `var(--space-16)` to `var(--space-24)`; prose capped at ~65ch; let the page breathe.
- **Imperfection & asymmetry:** staggered card offsets, off-center hero composition, hairline "crack" borders — but never at the cost of text readability or baseline alignment.
- **Mood:** calm, contemplative, handmade. No saturated colors, no loud gradients, soft low-opacity shadows. Optional: a subtle CSS-only grain texture (layered radial-gradients at ≤3% opacity). No image files, no SVG assets.
- **Copy:** All user-facing copy must be written in **English**, in a spare, calm, contemplative voice (short sentences, no exclamation marks). Invent one coherent fictional brand/product (e.g., a slow-living studio or mindfulness practice) and keep naming consistent across all sections. **No lorem ipsum.**

## 1. STRICT RULES & ARCHITECTURE

### 1.1 CSS-First Architecture & Zero Inline CSS
- **No Inline CSS:** The `style="..."` attribute is forbidden anywhere in the HTML. No presentational HTML attributes.
- **Class/ID Selectors Only:** All design properties, layout rules, and states live in `style.css`, targeted via class/ID/element selectors.
- **Minimal HTML Modifications:** HTML must remain semantic and styling-agnostic — changing the look must only require editing `style.css`.

### 1.2 CSS Variables & Theme Tokens
All visual tokens must live in `:root` in `style.css`. Use the provided token system as the canonical source, extended with the mandatory semantic aliases below:

```css
:root {
  /* — Zen palette (light) — */
  --color-bg: #f2ede4;
  --color-surface: #e9e1d2;
  --color-surface-strong: #ded2ba;
  --color-border: #c9bea9;
  --color-text: #33302a;
  --color-text-muted: #71685c;
  --color-primary: #7a4f36;
  --color-accent: #566349;
  --color-ink: #4a4740;
  --color-on-primary: #f2ede4; /* text paired on primary backgrounds */
  /* — mandatory semantic aliases — */
  --bg-primary: var(--color-bg);
  --bg-secondary: var(--color-surface);
  --text-primary: var(--color-text);
  --text-secondary: var(--color-text-muted);
  --primary: var(--color-primary);
  --secondary: var(--color-accent);
  --border-default: var(--color-border);
  --text-success: #4d6b3f;
  --text-error: #a4432e;
  --border-success: #566349;
  --border-error: #a4432e;
  /* — radius / shadow / font / text scale / space / ease — as provided — */
  --radius-sm: 3px; --radius-md: 10px; --radius-lg: 18px; --radius-pill: 999px;
  --shadow-sm: 0 1px 3px rgba(51,48,42,.08);
  --shadow-md: 0 3px 10px rgba(51,48,42,.10);
  --shadow-lg: 0 6px 20px rgba(51,48,42,.12);
  --font-sans: 'Shippori Mincho','Noto Serif JP','Iowan Old Style',Georgia,serif;
  --font-display: 'Shippori Mincho',serif;
  --text-xs: .75rem; --text-sm: .875rem; --text-base: 1rem; --text-lg: 1.125rem;
  --text-xl: 1.375rem; --text-2xl: 1.75rem; --text-3xl: 2.25rem; --text-4xl: 3rem; --text-5xl: 4rem;
  --space-1: 6px; --space-2: 12px; --space-3: 18px; --space-4: 28px; --space-6: 40px;
  --space-8: 56px; --space-12: 80px; --space-16: 112px; --space-24: 160px;
  --ease-standard: cubic-bezier(.4,0,.2,1);
  --organic-radius: 22px 6px 26px 4px / 14px 20px 8px 24px;
  --organic-radius-inverse: 6px 22px 4px 26px / 20px 14px 24px 8px;
  --hairline-crack: 1px solid var(--color-border);
  /* — mandated additions — */
  --spacing-gap: var(--space-4);
  --transition-fast: 150ms;
  --transition-normal: 250ms;
  --z-dropdown: 100; --z-modal: 200; --z-toast: 300;
}
```

- **Contrast Pairing:** Every light background token must pair with a dark text token and every dark background token with a light text token — enforced per theme (including dark mode), not just the default. Buttons on `--color-primary` must use `--color-on-primary`.
- **Light Mode Background:** Never default to pure white; the base is `#f2ede4`. Where a near-white is genuinely needed, use `#fefefe`, never `#ffffff`.

### 1.3 Mandatory Dark Mode Support
The source specification does not declare color modes; therefore you **must derive, implement, and visually validate both light and dark themes** before considering the build complete.
- **Implementation:** Redefine the full token set for dark mode under **both** `@media (prefers-color-scheme: dark)` (applied to `:root:not(.light)`) **and** an explicit `:root.dark` selector — keep both blocks identical.
- **Suggested dark starting values (verify WCAG AA, adjust as needed):** `--color-bg: #232019; --color-surface: #2b2720; --color-surface-strong: #363028; --color-border: #4a4437; --color-text: #ece4d3; --color-text-muted: #a99d89; --color-primary: #c19a6b; --color-accent: #9aab84; --color-ink: #d6cdba; --color-on-primary: #26221b; --text-success: #a9c08a; --text-error: #e0937b; --border-success: #9aab84; --border-error: #e0937b;` and deepen shadows toward `rgba(0,0,0,.3+)`.
- **Theme Switching:** Background/text variables must swap with no HTML restructuring. Add a calm `transition: background-color var(--transition-normal), color var(--transition-normal)` on themed surfaces.
- **Persistence:** Store the user's choice in `localStorage` (e.g., key `wabi-theme`), falling back to `prefers-color-scheme` on first visit. Apply the class to `<html>`. Provide a visible toggle control (see 2.5) with correct `aria-pressed` and `aria-label` state.

### 1.4 Flexbox Layout & Mobile-First Alignment
- Build all layout structures with **Flexbox**.
- **Default Alignment Rule:** Every flex container defaults to `align-items: center` unless an exception is explicitly justified in a CSS comment (e.g., stacked form fields use `stretch`).
- **Mobile-Friendly First:** Rows must convert to columns on small viewports; no horizontal scrolling at any width from 320px up.

### 1.5 Framework & Styling Approach
**Explicit exception:** The provided custom token system supersedes Tailwind for this build. Use clean, hand-authored custom CSS only — no Tailwind, no other frameworks. You may organize `style.css` with native CSS cascade layers (`@layer tokens, base, components, layout, utilities`). All component styles must map to the tokens above.

### 1.6 Typography & Icons (Google Fonts Mandatory)
- **Text:** Load **Shippori Mincho** (400/500/600/700) and **Noto Serif JP** (400/500) via Google Fonts `<link>` tags with `preconnect`. Bind them to `--font-sans` / `--font-display`. Body line-height ≥ 1.6.
- **Icons:** Use **Google Material Symbols (Outlined)** loaded via Google Fonts. Render as `<span class="material-symbols-outlined" aria-hidden="true">icon_name</span>`. **Raw inline SVGs, local icon files, and emoji-as-icons are forbidden.**
- Required `<head>` links: two `preconnect` tags (fonts.googleapis.com, fonts.gstatic.com), the Shippori Mincho/Noto Serif JP stylesheet, and the Material Symbols Outlined stylesheet.

## 2. COMPONENT DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS

### 2.1 Button Component (`.btn`, `.btn--primary`, `.btn--ghost`, `.btn--danger`)
- **Default:** `display: flex; align-items: center; justify-content: center; gap: 0.5rem;` using the provided base (organic-inverse radius, surface bg, hairline border, `--shadow-sm`). Minimum touch target **44×44px** (`min-height: 44px`). Icon-only buttons get `min-width: 44px` + `aria-label`.
- **Hover:** `--shadow-md` + `translateY(-1px)`, `cursor: pointer`.
- **Focus:** Distinct keyboard ring — `:focus-visible { outline: 1px solid var(--color-primary); outline-offset: 3px; }` visible in both themes.
- **Active/Pressed:** Add `transform: scale(0.97)` press feedback (in addition to the provided `translateY(0)` reset).
- **Loading (`.btn--loading`):** Disables interaction and prevents double-clicks (`pointer-events: none` + `aria-busy="true"`); renders a pure-CSS spinner (rotating border ring) or animated Material Symbol without changing button dimensions (reserve space via `min-width`).
- **Disabled:** `opacity: 0.5`, grayscale filter, `cursor: not-allowed`, no transform.
- **Success/Error (`.btn--success`, `.btn--error`):** Temporary feedback states driven by `--text-success` / `--text-error`, never color-only (pair with icon or text).
- **Danger (`.btn--danger`):** Must be visually distinct in **both** themes using the error tokens with correct contrast pairing.

### 2.2 Card Component (`.card`)
- **Default:** Flexbox layout, `--color-surface` bg, `--organic-radius`, `--hairline-crack` border, `--shadow-md`, generous `--space-8` padding.
- **Hover:** `translateY(-2px)` + `--shadow-lg`.
- **Focus-within:** Border color shifts to `--color-primary` when a child link/button receives focus.
- **Loading (`.card--skeleton`):** Shimmer animation defined in CSS (no layout jumps).
- **Empty (`.card--empty`):** Structured fallback with a Material Symbol and clear guidance text.

### 2.3 Form & Input (newsletter capture in the Final CTA)
- **Structure:** Flex column `.input-group` wrapping a visible `<label>` (with `for`), the `.input` field (provided underline style), and a dedicated error/status container.
- **States:** Empty; Focused (underline turns `--color-primary` + visible focus ring); Filled; Valid (`.input--valid`: `--border-success` + check icon); Invalid (`.input--invalid`: `--border-error`, error text + icon, `aria-invalid="true"`, `aria-describedby`); Disabled; Read-only.
- **Behavior:** Validate email format on submit; show button loading state, then success (`.btn--success`) or error; announce results in an `aria-live="polite"` status region. Never rely on color alone.

### 2.4 Modal / Popup (only if you add any overlay, e.g., a "Watch the ceremony" panel — optional)
- **States:** Opening, Open, Loading, Success/Error, Closing — all animated via CSS transitions.
- **UX:** Centered flex container (`align-items: center`), backdrop overlay, Material Symbol close button, keyboard focus trapping, close via `Esc` and overlay click, `role="dialog"` + `aria-modal`, z-index `var(--z-modal)`.

### 2.5 Navigation & Theme Toggle
- Sticky header using the provided `.nav` base (flex, `align-items: center`, organic radius, surface bg, `--shadow-sm`, `--z-dropdown` for the mobile panel).
- **Desktop:** brand left; links; theme toggle + primary CTA right. **Mobile:** links collapse behind a Material `menu`/`close` icon button with `aria-expanded` + `aria-controls`; closes on `Esc` and link click.
- **Theme toggle:** 44×44 icon button swapping Material `dark_mode`/`light_mode` symbols; `aria-pressed="true"` when dark is active; `aria-label` updates ("Switch to dark theme" / "Switch to light theme"); persists via `localStorage` per 1.3.
- First focusable element: a "Skip to content" skip link.

### 2.6 Hero
- Asymmetric flex composition (column on mobile): text block offset beside a **pure-CSS enso ring** (circle with an intentional brush-gap via `mask-image` gradient, `aria-hidden="true"`, slow draw/fade entrance respecting `prefers-reduced-motion`).
- `.badge` with Material Symbol above the H1; H1 in `--font-display` at `--text-4xl`/`--text-5xl` in `--color-ink`; subcopy `--text-lg` muted, max ~55ch; two CTAs: `.btn--primary` + `.btn--ghost`. Vertical padding `var(--space-24)` — the hero must embody *ma*.

### 2.7 Features (3 cards)
- Three `.card` blocks, each: Material Symbol in a small circular `--color-surface-strong` chip, H3, muted paragraph.
- **Asymmetry:** stagger the middle card with a vertical offset (e.g., `translateY(24px)`) on ≥768px only.
- Apply all `.card` states from 2.2.

### 2.8 How It Works (3 steps)
- Semantic `<ol>`; each `<li>`: decorative Japanese numeral (一 / 二 / 三, `aria-hidden="true"`) or Material Symbol, step title, short text. Connect steps with a hairline "path" border — horizontal on desktop, vertical on mobile.

### 2.9 Testimonials
- Three quotes with `<blockquote>`/`<cite>` semantics, muted text, generous line-height; Material `person` symbol in a circle chip (never photos); middle quote offset for asymmetry.

### 2.10 Pricing (3 tiers)
- Three `.card` variants; **middle tier emphasized**: `--color-surface-strong` bg, `.badge` "Most chosen", `--shadow-lg`, slightly larger padding. Each tier: name, price, feature list with Material `check` icons, CTA (middle: `.btn--primary`; sides: `.btn`). Optional billing toggle: if included, it must be an accessible segmented control (`radiogroup`) with `aria-live` price updates.

### 2.11 FAQ (accessible accordion)
- Use native `<details name="faq">` / `<summary>` (exclusive-open where supported, graceful multiple-open fallback). Style `summary` as a flex row (`align-items: center`): question + Material `expand_more` icon rotating 180° when open; `:focus-visible` ring; hover feedback; animate open/close via a CSS technique (e.g., `grid-template-rows`) respecting `prefers-reduced-motion`. State must be communicated by icon + border, not color alone.

### 2.12 Final CTA
- Full-bleed band using `--color-surface-strong` inside an organic-radius container; centered flex column; H2 + one spare sentence + `.btn--primary` (large) + the newsletter `.input-group` from 2.3 demonstrating all form states.

### 2.13 Footer
- Multi-column flex (wraps to column on mobile): brand + one-line description; secondary link groups (e.g., Product / Company / Support); social icon links (Material Symbols with `aria-label`); legal line; "Back to top" link. Every link must resolve to an existing in-page anchor — no dead `href="#"` links. Muted link color with hover underline.

## 3. CORE UX & MICRO-INTERACTION RULES
- **Responsive by Default:** Fluid sizing from 320px to 1920px; zero horizontal overflow; rows → columns at breakpoints.
- **Smooth Animations:** `transition: var(--transition-normal) var(--ease-standard)` on all state changes; fully disable transforms/animations under `prefers-reduced-motion: reduce`.
- **Accessibility:** WCAG AA contrast in **both** light and dark; semantic HTML5 landmarks (`header`, `nav`, `main`, `section` with `aria-labelledby`, `footer`); exactly one `<h1>` with logical heading order; full keyboard operability with visible focus; `aria-live` regions for all dynamic feedback (form status, toasts); never color-only state communication.
- **Mandatory Visual Feedback:** Every click, hover, and submission triggers a visible state change.
- **Destructive Actions:** Any destructive control must be visually distinct in both themes via the error tokens.
- **Progressive Enhancement:** If scroll-reveal animations are used, content must be fully visible with JavaScript disabled (hide/animation classes applied only via a `.js` class the script adds to `<html>`).

---

## 4. DELIVERABLE & OUTPUT FORMAT
- **File Structure:** Exactly three files — `index.html`, `style.css`, `script.js`. One single `<script src="script.js" defer></script>` reference in `<head>`; no inline script blocks, no inline styles.
- **Naming Convention:** BEM only (`.block`, `.block__element`, `.block--modifier`) — matching the provided `.btn--primary` pattern. Never mix conventions.
- **Copy:** All user-facing copy in English, authored in the theme's calm voice; no lorem ipsum; no unrequested placeholder content.
- **Validation Checklist (must pass before submitting):** both themes toggle and persist correctly; contrast verified in light and dark; keyboard-only walkthrough of nav, FAQ, form, and all buttons; 320px viewport shows no horizontal scroll; zero console errors; all Google Fonts/Material Symbols load from Google's CDN.
