## Project: "BROADSIDE" — Newspaper Editorial Landing Page (Dark-Only, 2020s Design Studio)

**Role:** Act as a Senior Frontend Engineer and Expert UI Designer. Build the complete, production-ready landing page described in this document in a single attempt. Every rule below is mandatory; where a rule conflicts with a habit or shortcut, the rule wins. All user-facing copy must be written in **English**.

---

## 0. PROJECT BRIEF & THEME DIRECTION

**0.1 Product Concept & Copy:** Invent one coherent fictional product and keep all copy in its voice — recommended: "Broadside," a bilingual editorial publishing platform (the "bilingual" keyword is honored as a product feature — side-by-side dual-language editions — and as typographic editorial flavor; all copy remains English). **Never use lorem ipsum.** Write real, thematic English copy for every headline, deck, feature, quote, FAQ answer, pricing tier, and footer colophon.

**0.2 Mood & Visual Language:** Newspaper editorial / broadside / dramatic / graphic / high contrast / 2020s design studio. Think front page: masthead, dateline, edition numbers, small-caps kickers, hairline column rules, pull quotes. Typographic drama over decoration. **Forbidden:** gradients, glassmorphism, pill shapes, drop-shadow soup, decorative color beyond the palette, image collages (imagery optional; if used, treat as grayscale/duotone via CSS filters with meaningful `alt` text).

**0.3 Palette → Token Mapping (mandatory, exact values):**

| Role | Token | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Canvas | `--bg-primary` | `#111111` |
| Panel surface | `--bg-secondary` | `#1a1a18` |
| Primary text | `--text-primary` | `#f0ece5` (warm cream) |
| Muted text | `--text-secondary` | `#888880` |
| Fire orange (accent) | `--primary` | `#e85d26` |
| Inverse tone | `--secondary` | `#f0ece5` |
| Hairline border | `--border-default` | `#282826` |
| Success | `--text-success` / `--border-success` | `#4ade80` |
| Error | `--text-error` / `--border-error` | `#f87171` |

**0.4 Accent Discipline:** Fire orange `#e85d26` may appear **only** on: (a) one accent word/phrase per headline and section kicker slugs; (b) 2px horizontal rules (page top rule, featured-card top rules, pull-quote rules); (c) primary CTA buttons and accent badges (always with `#111111` text); (d) focus rings, hover affordances, and pricing check icons. **Forbidden elsewhere:** orange body text, large orange fills, gradients, static glows (glow allowed only as hover shadow on the primary CTA). Everything else stays cream/muted on near-black.

**0.5 Signature Texture:** A **2px solid `#e85d26` rule runs across the very top of the viewport** (CSS on `body`/`::before` — no extra markup). Hairline `#282826` rules separate every section and act as column separators. Every section opens with an uppercase kicker (letter-spacing `.12–.18em`) and edition-style microcopy (e.g., "Vol. 01 — Nº 04 · Independent Edition").

## 1. STRICT ARCHITECTURE RULES

**1.1 CSS-First Architecture & Zero Inline CSS**
* **No Inline CSS:** Styling with `style="..."` attributes is forbidden. Inline event handlers (`onclick`, etc.) and `<style>` blocks in HTML are forbidden.
* **Class/ID Selectors Only:** All design properties, layout, and states are targeted via class/ID selectors in `style.css`.
* **Minimal HTML Modifications:** HTML remains clean, semantic (`header`, `nav`, `main`, `section`, `figure`, `blockquote`, `details`, `footer`), and style-agnostic — retheming must require editing `style.css` only.

**1.2 CSS Variables & Theme Tokens**
Define this token contract verbatim as the minimum in `:root` (extend as needed, never hard-code these values elsewhere):

```css
:root {
  --primary: #e85d26; --secondary: #f0ece5;
  --bg-primary: #111111; --bg-secondary: #1a1a18;
  --text-primary: #f0ece5; --text-secondary: #888880;
  --text-success: #4ade80; --text-error: #f87171;
  --border-default: #282826; --border-success: #4ade80; --border-error: #f87171;
  --radius-sm: 2px; --radius-md: 2px; --radius-lg: 4px; /* sharp editorial corners */
  --shadow-sm: 0 2px 10px rgba(0,0,0,.45);
  --shadow-md: 0 10px 30px rgba(0,0,0,.55);
  --shadow-glow: 0 8px 24px rgba(232,93,38,.18), 0 0 0 1px rgba(232,93,38,.35);
  --spacing-gap: clamp(1.25rem, 3vw, 2rem);
  --transition-fast: 200ms; --transition-normal: 250ms;
  --ease-standard: cubic-bezier(.2, 0, 0, 1);
  --z-header: 900; --z-dropdown: 1000; --z-modal: 1100; --z-toast: 1200;
  --font-base: 'Barlow', sans-serif;
}
```

* **Contrast Pairing:** Every dark surface pairs with light text (`#111111`/`#1a1a18` ↔ `#f0ece5`); every light/orange fill pairs with `#111111` text. Enforce for every filled element, badge, and button.
* **Light Background:** N/A — this is a dark-only theme (see 1.3); if any near-white fill is ever required, use `#f0ece5`, never `#ffffff`.
* **Radius & Shadows:** Sharp corners (2px max) everywhere — no pills. Lifts use `--shadow-md`; primary CTA hover may use `--shadow-glow`.
* **Spacing, Transitions, Elevation:** Use the gap/transition/z tokens above; the spec's `--accent` is exposed as `--primary` (an `--accent: var(--primary)` alias is permitted).

**1.3 Mandatory Dark Mode — Dark-Only Single Theme**
* **Implementation:** Broadside is full-dark by spec. Define the complete dark palette in `:root` as the one and only theme; set `html { color-scheme: dark; }` and `<meta name="color-scheme" content="dark">` so UA controls/scrollbars match; the page must never render a light canvas under any `prefers-color-scheme`.
* **Theme State & Persistence:** `script.js` applies a `.dark` class to `<html>` as the canonical theme state on load, persists the resolved choice to `localStorage` under a namespaced key (e.g., `"broadside:theme"`), falling back to `prefers-color-scheme` — the resolved result is always dark.
* **Contrast Verification:** Check WCAG AA for: cream on `#111111` (≈15:1); muted on `#111111` and `#1a1a18`; `#111111` on `#e85d26` (≈5.4:1); orange text only at ≥24px/700 weight on dark.
* **Exception (per style spec ✗ Light / ✓ Full Dark):** no light token set and no visible theme toggle exist for this theme — do not invent them.

**1.4 Flexbox Layout & Mobile-First Alignment**
* **Default Alignment Rule:** Every flex container defaults to `align-items: center`. Explicitly justified exceptions, and only these: `.card`/pricing rows use `align-items: stretch` for equal heights; text blocks (`.input-group`, article bodies, footer columns) use `flex-start` where top alignment is semantically required.
* **Mobile-Friendly First:** Single-column base; rows introduced at `min-width: 640px / 960px / 1200px`; cards/CTAs stack via `flex-wrap`. No horizontal scrolling from 320px up (`overflow-x: clip` on `body`); fluid `clamp()` type everywhere. Newspaper column texture comes from borders on flex children (hairline `border-left`), not CSS multi-column.

**1.5 CSS Approach & Naming**
* Write clean, hand-authored custom CSS (no framework required). If you choose Tailwind, all styling must be authored via `@layer components` with `@apply` and the CSS variables — markup class names must still be the BEM classes defined here; never mix utility naming with BEM in markup.
* **BEM only:** `.block`, `.block__element`, `.block--modifier` (e.g., `.btn--primary`, `.card--featured`, `.input-group__error`). One convention across all files.

**1.6 Typography & Icons (Google Fonts Mandatory)**
* **Text:** Load Barlow (weights 400;500;600;700;800) via Google Fonts `<link>` (with `preconnect`). Optionally Barlow Condensed 600–700 strictly for kickers/datelines. Bind `--font-base: 'Barlow', sans-serif`. Headlines: 700/800, uppercase, line-height 0.95–1.05, slight negative tracking. Hero `clamp(2.75rem, 7vw, 5.75rem)`; section h2 `clamp(1.75rem, 3.5vw, 2.75rem)`; body `1rem/1.7`.
* **Icons:** Google Material Symbols (Outlined) via Google Fonts link. **Forbidden:** raw inline SVGs, local icon fonts, emoji as UI icons. Decorative icons get `aria-hidden="true"`; icon-only buttons get `aria-label`.

---

## 2. COMPONENT DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS

**2.1 Buttons** (`.btn` + `.btn--primary`, `.btn--secondary`, `.btn--danger`; state classes `.is-loading`, `.is-success`, `.is-error`)
* **Default:** `display:flex; align-items:center; justify-content:center; gap:.5rem;` min-height 44px; padding `.75rem 1.5rem`; uppercase, letter-spacing `.08em`, weight 600; `border-radius: var(--radius-sm)`; transitions on background/border/shadow/transform at `var(--transition-fast)`; `cursor:pointer`.
* **Variants:** `.btn--primary` — bg `var(--primary)`, text `#111111`; hover: brightness 1.08 + `--shadow-glow` + `translateY(-1px)`. `.btn--secondary` — 1px `var(--border-default)`, cream text; hover: accent border + accent text.
* **Hover:** always a visible shift (brightness/shadow/border). **Focus:** `:focus-visible` — `outline: 2px solid var(--primary); outline-offset: 3px` (never removed). **Active:** `transform: scale(0.97)`.
* **Loading:** `.is-loading` → `aria-busy="true"`, `pointer-events: none` (prevents double-clicks), CSS spinner via `::after` (2px border, accent top edge, rotation keyframes) that does not distort button dimensions; under `prefers-reduced-motion`, swap rotation for an opacity pulse.
* **Disabled:** `opacity:.5; filter: grayscale(100%); cursor: not-allowed` — no hover/lift.
* **Success/Error:** brief post-submit states with Material `check_circle`/`error` icons in `--text-success`/`--text-error`, announced via an `aria-live` region.
* **Danger:** `.btn--danger` — `var(--border-error)` border + `var(--text-error)` text; must remain visually distinct on the dark canvas.

**2.2 Cards** (`.card`, `.card--featured`, `.card--skeleton`, `.empty-state`)
* **Default:** flex column (stretch), bg `var(--bg-secondary)`, 1px `var(--border-default)`, `--radius-sm`, padding `clamp(1.25rem, 3vw, 2rem)`.
* **Hover (interactive cards only):** `translateY(-2px)` + `--shadow-md` + border shifting toward `rgba(232,93,38,.5)`.
* **Focus-within:** card border turns `var(--primary)` when a child link/button is focused (child keeps its own focus ring).
* **Loading (Skeleton):** `.card--skeleton` shimmer via `::before` linear-gradient sweep; sized to match real content so no layout jump; disabled under reduced motion.
* **Empty State:** `.empty-state` — centered flex with a Material `newspaper` icon, heading, and guidance text; define in CSS even though the default render always has content.

**2.3 Forms & Inputs** (`.input-group`)
* **Structure:** `.input-group` = flex column wrapping: `<label class="input-group__label">` (uppercase micro-style, `for`/`id` bound), `<input class="input-group__input">`, and a dedicated error container `<p class="input-group__error">` (icon + text, `role="alert"`/`aria-live`, hidden until invalid) plus a success container (`role="status"`).
* **States:** empty (placeholder in `--text-secondary`); `:focus` — accent border + `box-shadow: 0 0 0 3px rgba(232,93,38,.2)`; filled; `.is-valid` — `--border-success` + trailing check icon; `.is-invalid` — `--border-error`, red text, error icon + message (never color-only); `[disabled]` — `opacity:.5`, `cursor:not-allowed`; `[readonly]` — muted text, no accent focus.
* Input base: height 48px, bg `var(--bg-primary)`, 1px `--border-default`, `--radius-sm`, cream text.

**2.4 Modal / Overlay (reusable spec — no modal markup is requested below)**
* Define a complete reusable `.modal` component in `style.css`: centered flex overlay (`align-items:center; justify-content:center`), `.modal__backdrop` `rgba(0,0,0,.65)`, panel bg `var(--bg-secondary)` with 2px accent top rule, `--shadow-md`, `z-index: var(--z-modal)`; opening/open/loading/success/error/closing states animated at `var(--transition-normal)` (opacity + translateY/scale); Material `close` icon button (`aria-label="Close dialog"`).
* **Do not add modal triggers to the page** — the requested sections need none. If you add any modal markup anyway, JS must trap focus inside, close on `Esc` and backdrop click, restore focus to the trigger, and set `role="dialog" aria-modal="true"`.

---

## 3. CORE UX & MICRO-INTERACTION RULES

* **Responsive by Default:** fluid `clamp()` sizing from 320px to 1920px, zero horizontal overflow, touch targets ≥44×44px, `scroll-margin-top` on section anchors to offset the sticky masthead.
* **Smooth Animations:** every state change transitions at 200–250ms (`var(--transition-fast)`/`--transition-normal`); hover lifts ≤2px. Under `@media (prefers-reduced-motion: reduce)`: disable transforms, shimmer, smooth scrolling, and chevron rotation; keep opacity-based feedback.
* **Accessibility (a11y):** skip-to-content link (visually hidden until focused); semantic landmarks, exactly one `h1`, logical heading order; full keyboard operability for nav toggle, FAQ (`<details>`/`<summary>`), and form; `:focus-visible` accent ring everywhere; `aria-expanded` on the nav toggle; `aria-live` for form errors/success/loading; state never communicated by color alone (pair color with icon/text); decorative icons `aria-hidden`.
* **Mandatory Visual Feedback:** every hover, focus, click, and submission produces a visible state change; nav links get an accent underline-reveal on hover.
* **Destructive Actions:** `.btn--danger` defined per 2.1 (unused by default, but distinct in this theme).
* **Selection:** `::selection { background: var(--primary); color: #111111; }`.
* **Toast:** define a reusable `.toast` component (bottom-positioned, `--z-toast`, `aria-live`) in CSS for future dynamic feedback; the default page uses inline feedback instead.

---

## 4. DELIVERABLES & OUTPUT FORMAT

* **File Structure:** exactly three files — `index.html`, `style.css`, `script.js`. The only `<script>` is a single **deferred** reference to `script.js`. No inline styles, no inline scripts, no CDN JavaScript.
* **Naming Convention:** BEM throughout (per 1.5); comments in English; no dead CSS beyond the reusable components mandated in §2.
* **No Unrequested Placeholders:** all copy is real, thematic English per 0.1 — never lorem ipsum. Placeholder `href="#"` is permitted **only** for footer/legal/secondary links with no target on this page; anywhere a real anchor exists, link to it.
* **Head requirements:** title, meta description, `<meta name="color-scheme" content="dark">`, `<meta name="theme-color" content="#111111">`, Google Fonts links per 1.6.
* **Progressive enhancement:** the page renders and reads fully with JavaScript disabled; `script.js` only enhances (theme class/persistence, nav toggle, form validation and feedback, optional date, optional header shadow).

## 5. PAGE BUILD SHEET — REQUIRED SECTIONS (in order)

**5.0 Masthead (sticky site header):** Global 2px accent top rule at the very top of the viewport. `.masthead`: flex row, `items-center`, `justify-between`, bg `var(--bg-primary)`, hairline bottom border; optional shadow class on scroll. Left: wordmark "BROADSIDE." (Barlow 800, final period in `var(--primary)`). Middle: anchor nav (Features, How it works, Testimonials, Pricing, FAQ) with accent underline-reveal hover. Right: compact `.btn--primary` "Subscribe" → `#cta`. Below 960px: `.nav-toggle` icon button (Material `menu`/`close`) toggles an absolute nav panel (`--z-dropdown`, full-width, hairline border) — `aria-expanded` synced, `Esc`/outside-click close, focus returns to the toggle. Optional dateline strip: hairline-bounded muted uppercase microcopy ("Vol. 01 · Nº 04 — The Independent Edition"; JS may render the current date with a static fallback).

**5.1 Hero (#hero):** front-page composition. Accent kicker slug above the headline; `h1` Barlow 800 uppercase `clamp(2.75rem,7vw,5.75rem)`, line-height .95, cream, with **exactly one** accent word/phrase via a semantic `<span>`; deck in `--text-secondary` (`1.125–1.25rem`, max-width 65ch); CTA row (flex, wrap, gap): `.btn--primary` "Start publishing" (arrow icon) → `#pricing`, `.btn--secondary` "See how it works" → `#how`. Desktop ≥960px: flex row split — headline column + right-rail "In this issue" index panel (bg-secondary, hairline border, 2px accent top rule) listing numbered anchor links to all sections; stacks below CTAs on mobile. Optional stat strip: 3 invented facts separated by hairline vertical rules. Full-width hairline rule ends the section.

**5.2 Features (#features):** 3 cards. Section header pattern (used by all sections): uppercase accent `.section__kicker` + `h2` (Barlow 700 uppercase) + full-width hairline rule. ≥960px: flex row of three equal `.card`s (`align-items: stretch`, gap `--spacing-gap`); mobile stacks. Each card: short 2px accent tick rule, index numeral ("01") Barlow 800 2rem cream, optional muted Material icon, `h3` uppercase, real muted body copy (recommended topics: layout engine; bilingual edition publishing; typography controls), "Learn more" text link with accent hover. Card hover/focus-within per 2.2.

**5.3 How It Works (#how):** 3 steps. Flex row ≥960px separated by hairline vertical rules (stacks on mobile). Each step: oversized numeral "01/02/03" Barlow 800 cream with a 2px accent rule beneath, `h3`, muted body. Suggested narrative: Draft → Compose on the grid → Ship the edition. Non-interactive: no hover lift, no pointer cursor.

**5.4 Testimonials (#testimonials):** pull quotes. One featured `.quote--featured` (quote at 1.5rem, 2px accent left rule, oversized decorative `"` glyph in Barlow 800) + two standard quotes (hairline left rule) in a row ≥960px; stack on mobile. Markup: `<figure><blockquote>…</blockquote><figcaption>Name — Role, Publication</figcaption></figure>`; fictional attributions; no interactive affordances.

**5.5 Pricing (#pricing):** 3 tiers. Flex row ≥960px, equal widths via stretch. Middle `.card--featured`: 2px accent top border + "Editor's Choice" badge (accent bg, `#111111` text, uppercase micro). Each tier: kicker-style name, price in Barlow 800 ($0 / $12 / $29) + muted "/month" + billing note, hairline rule, feature list with Material `check` icons in `var(--primary)` (green reserved for form semantics), CTA — featured tier `.btn--primary`, others `.btn--secondary`, all → `#cta`. Hover + focus-within per 2.2; muted reassurance microcopy beneath the row.

**5.6 FAQ (#faq):** 5–6 native `<details class="faq-item">` accordions. `<summary>`: flex row, `items-center`, `justify-between`; question Barlow 600 cream; Material `expand_more` chevron rotating 180° on `[open]` (`--transition-fast`; none under reduced motion); default marker removed. Hairline rules between items; 1.25rem vertical padding; summary hover tint `var(--bg-secondary)`; `:focus-visible` accent ring; open answer in `--text-secondary` with a 2px accent left rule. Closing line: "Still have questions?" with `mail` icon + contact link.

**5.7 Final CTA (#cta):** full-bleed closing panel — bg `var(--bg-secondary)`, 2px accent top rule, centered flex column, generous `clamp()` padding. Kicker ("Final Edition") + display `h2` `clamp(2rem,5vw,3.5rem)` with one accent word + one-line muted deck. Email capture form per 2.3 with visible label, email input, `.btn--primary` submit "Subscribe". Behavior: validate on submit (and blur after first attempt); invalid → `.is-invalid` + inline icon + message (`role="alert"`); valid → button `.is-loading` (spinner, `aria-busy`, input disabled) ~900ms → `.is-success` ("You're on the list") + inline success message (`role="status"`) + form reset. Microcopy beneath: "No spam. Unsubscribe anytime."

**5.8 Footer:** 2px accent top rule. ≥960px flex row: brand block (wordmark, one-line mission, social icon buttons — Material `rss_feed` + `mail`, `aria-label`s, ≥44px targets) + three link columns (Product: real section anchors; Company: About/Careers/Contact — `#` permitted; Legal: Privacy/Terms — `#` permitted). Bottom bar: hairline top, flex between — "© 2025 Broadside Press. All rights reserved." · colophon "Set in Barlow · Printed on pixels" in muted · back-to-top control (Material `north` icon + "Top") smooth-scrolling to `#top` (reduced-motion safe).
