## 1. STRICT RULES & ARCHITECTURE

### **1.1 CSS-First Architecture & Zero Inline CSS**
- All styling must live in a dedicated `style.css` file. **The `style="..."` attribute is strictly forbidden anywhere in the HTML.**
- All design properties, layout rules, and states must be targeted via class or ID selectors only.
- HTML must remain clean, semantic, and style-agnostic: changing the site's look must never require markup edits.

### **1.2 CSS Variables & Theme Tokens**
Store every visual token in `:root` using CSS variables. Define exactly these base tokens with the CHROMA LAB values:

**Light theme (default, `:root`):**
- `--primary: #2F6BFF` (accent for surfaces, glows, gradients)
- `--primary-strong: #1F55E0` (AA-safe accent for text links and filled buttons — white text on this fill passes 4.5:1)
- `--secondary: #8B887F` (muted lab gray — decorative/meta use only)
- `--bg-primary: #F5F4F0` (warm paper page background)
- `--bg-secondary: #FFFFFF` (card/surface fills — **exception clause:** pure white `#FFFFFF` is permitted here only because the palette explicitly assigns it; it must never be used as a page-level background, and any other near-white must be `#fefefe`)
- `--bg-tertiary: #ECEBE4` (inset wells, code/specimen strips)
- `--text-primary: #1C1B18`
- `--text-secondary: #6B685F` (darkened from `#8B887F` to meet 4.5:1 for body copy; raw `#8B887F` may only be used for borders, decorative elements, or text ≥ 24px / 18.66px bold)
- `--text-success: #15803D` · `--text-error: #B42318`
- `--border-default: #E3E1D8` · `--border-success: #15803D` · `--border-error: #B42318`
- Shape/motion/stacking: `--radius-sm: 4px`, `--radius-md: 12px`, `--radius-lg: 20px`, `--shadow-sm`, `--shadow-md` (define soft, low-spread lab shadows), `--spacing-gap: 1.5rem`, `--transition-fast: 120ms`, `--transition-normal: 240ms`, `--ease-standard: cubic-bezier(0.2, 0, 0, 1)`, `--z-header: 50`, `--z-dropdown: 100`, `--z-modal: 1000`, `--z-toast: 1100`
- Typography tokens: `--font-display`, `--font-base`, `--font-mono` (see §1.6)
- Decorative specimen hues (constant across themes, used only in the mixer visual, gradients, and avatars): `--spec-red: #FF5252`, `--spec-yellow: #FFD43B`, `--spec-blue: #2F6BFF`, plus a `--mix-blend` token set to `multiply` in light mode

**Contrast pairing rule:** every light background token must pair with a dark text token and every dark background token with a light text token — verified in both themes, not just the default.

### **1.3 Mandatory Dark Mode Support**
- Dark Mode must always be defined: provide dark values under both `@media (prefers-color-scheme: dark)` and a `.dark` class on `<html>`/`<body>`.
- **Dark tokens:** `--bg-primary: #1C1B18`, `--bg-secondary: #26241E`, `--bg-tertiary: #2E2C26`, `--text-primary: #F5F4F0`, `--text-secondary: #A9A59A`, `--border-default: #3B3931`, `--primary: #2F6BFF` (surfaces/glows), `--primary-strong: #7DA2FF` (links and filled buttons — pair with `#1C1B18` button text), `--text-success: #4ADE80`, `--text-error: #FF8073`, matching `--border-success`/`--border-error`, elevated dark shadows, and `--mix-blend: screen` (so the hero mixer blends correctly on dark).
- Background and text variables must switch seamlessly with no HTML restructuring. Set the `color-scheme` property on `:root` and `.dark` so native form controls and scrollbars match.
- **Persistence:** store the user's choice in `localStorage` (key `chroma-lab-theme`), fall back to `prefers-color-scheme` on first visit, and render a visible toggle control in the header with correct `aria-pressed` and `aria-label` ("Toggle dark mode") that swaps Google Material icons (`light_mode` / `dark_mode`).

### **1.4 Grid + Flexbox Layout & Mobile-First Alignment**
- Use **CSS Grid** for all macro layouts (hero columns, feature/step/pricing/testimonial grids, footer columns) and **Flexbox** for all component internals.
- Every flex container must default to `align-items: center` unless an exception is explicitly justified in a CSS comment.
- Mobile-first: all multi-column grids collapse to a single column on small viewports; no horizontal scrolling at any width; use `clamp()` for fluid typography and spacing; wrap all content in a `.container` with a max-width (~1160px) and horizontal padding.

### **1.5 Styling Approach & Naming Convention**
- The source spec requests raw CSS techniques (Grid, blend modes, filters, keyframes), so use **clean custom CSS** organized in explicit cascade order: tokens → base/reset → layout → components → utilities. No CSS-in-JS, no styled-components.
- Enforce **BEM naming** (`block__element--modifier`) exclusively across HTML and CSS — never mix conventions.

### **1.6 Typography & Icons (Google Fonts Mandatory)**
- Load via Google Fonts `<link>` tags (with `preconnect`): **Space Grotesk** (display, 600/700), **Inter** (body, 400/500/600), **IBM Plex Mono** (specimen labels, step numbers, data, prices, 400/500). Bind them to `--font-display`, `--font-base`, `--font-mono`.
- Icons: **Google Material Symbols (Outlined)** loaded via the official `<link>`. **Inline SVGs, local icon files, and external image assets are strictly forbidden.** Avatars must be CSS gradient circles with initials text; the logo is a typographic wordmark plus one Material icon.

## 2. CHROMA LAB VISUAL LANGUAGE (THEME-SPECIFIC DIRECTION)

- **Aesthetic:** a scientific specimen sheet / laboratory bench. Warm paper background, ink typography, thin blueprint grid lines (repeating `linear-gradient` of `--border-default` at low opacity behind the hero), monospace specimen labels (e.g., `SPECIMEN 01 — SUBTRACTIVE MIX`, `ΔE < 2.0`, `CONTRAST: PASS`), and small data annotations in `--font-mono`.
- **Signature hero visual:** three large blurred circles (`filter: blur(48px)`, keyframe drift/orbit animations, 14–20s alternating cycles) filled with `--spec-red`, `--spec-yellow`, `--spec-blue`, overlapping with `mix-blend-mode: var(--mix-blend)` so their intersections visibly "mix" — the page's core metaphor. Use `aspect-ratio` to keep the visual stable. Include small mono labels pinned near each circle.
- **Gradients:** gradient text accent on one hero phrase (`background-clip: text`), a gradient border treatment on the highlighted pricing tier, and a blurred gradient blob band behind the Final CTA.
- **Blur:** `backdrop-filter: blur()` + translucent `--bg-primary` on the sticky header, guarded by `@supports` with a solid background fallback.
- **Hover effects:** cards lift (`translateY(-2px)` + shadow shift), swatches and avatars intensify via `filter: saturate()`/`hue-rotate()`, buttons brighten, accordion chevrons rotate, nav links gain an animated underline.
- All animated elements must respect `prefers-reduced-motion` (see §5).

## 3. PAGE BLUEPRINT — SECTION-BY-SECTION SPECIFICATIONS

**3.0 Global shell:** skip-to-content link, `<header>`, `<main>`, `<footer>` landmarks; each `<section>` gets an accessible name via `aria-labelledby` to its heading; one `<h1>` only (hero), `<h2>` per section, `<h3>` inside cards.

**3.1 Sticky header:** wordmark "CHROMA LAB" + `science` Material icon; nav links (Features, Process, Pricing, FAQ) that smooth-scroll to sections; theme toggle (§1.3); primary CTA button "Open the Bench". On mobile, the nav collapses into a hamburger disclosure: `<button>` with `aria-expanded`/`aria-controls`, animated panel at `--z-dropdown`, keyboard operable, closes on `Esc`.

**3.2 Hero:** two-column Grid (copy | mixer visual), stacking on mobile. Mono eyebrow label; `<h1>` anchored on the suggested copy **"Color theory, put to the test."** with a gradient-accented phrase; subcopy explaining CHROMA LAB as a scientific bench for mixing, measuring, and shipping accessible color; two CTAs — primary `.btn--primary` "Open the Bench" and secondary `.btn--ghost` "See the method"; a mono stats row (e.g., "16.7M mixable values · WCAG-checked output · Zero image assets").

**3.3 Features — 3 cards:** Grid of three `.card` blocks on `--bg-secondary`: **"Spectral Mixer"** (blend real color spaces), **"Contrast Lab"** (every mix scored against WCAG thresholds), **"Gamut Mapper"** (translate palettes across sRGB, P3, and print). Each card: Material icon (`tune`, `visibility`, `palette`), `<h3>`, body copy, a "Learn more →" text link, and a thin gradient swatch strip along the top edge. Full card state spec in §4.2.

**3.4 How It Works — 3 steps:** Grid of three numbered steps — **01 Load your swatches → 02 Run the mix → 03 Export the evidence** — connected by a horizontal gradient progress line that fills downward on mobile. Numbers rendered large in `--font-mono`; each step carries a small specimen swatch whose hue steps across the spectrum from step 01 to 03, plus one sentence of copy.

**3.5 Testimonials:** Grid of three quote cards: Material `format_quote` icon, one- to two-sentence authored quotes about color accuracy and accessibility wins, a gradient-initials avatar circle (built from the specimen hues), the person's name and role. Clearly professional, plausible, on-theme copy.

**3.6 Pricing — 3 tiers:** Grid of three `.card` pricing blocks — **Bench** (Free), **Lab** (middle, visually highlighted with a gradient border, `--shadow-md`, slightly scaled/elevated, mono "MOST TESTED" badge), **Studio** (teams) — each with a feature list using Material `check` icons and a full-state CTA button. Above the grid, a **monthly/annual billing toggle** (`role="switch"`, `aria-checked`, visible "save 20%" mono note): toggling swaps the prices with a transition and announces the change via a polite `aria-live` region.

**3.7 FAQ:** accordion of five authored Q&As (color spaces supported, WCAG guarantees, export formats, browser support, refunds) — full behavior spec in §4.4.

**3.8 Final CTA:** full-width band over blurred gradient blobs; `<h2>` anchored on **"Put your palette on the bench."**; an email signup `.input-group` (label, email input, submit button) with complete form states (§4.3) — on submit, simulate validation, show the button's loading state (~900ms), then render a success confirmation (or an inline invalid-email error) in an `aria-live` region.

**3.9 Footer with secondary links:** top area in a Grid — brand column (wordmark, one-liner, Material icon social buttons with `aria-label`s) plus three secondary link columns: **Product** (Features, Pricing, Changelog, Roadmap), **Resources** (Color docs, Contrast guide, API), **Company** (About, Contact, Privacy). Bottom bar: copyright line, a mono microcopy tag ("Built on the visible spectrum"), and a theme-mode note. Unspecified link targets may use `#`.

## 4. COMPONENT DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS

### **4.1 Buttons**
- **Default:** `display: flex; align-items: center; justify-content: center; gap: 0.5rem;` — minimum touch target 44×44px. Variants: `.btn--primary` (filled with `--primary-strong`, correct paired text color per theme), `.btn--ghost` (bordered, transparent), and a generic `.btn-danger` rule (not required by any section, but if any destructive action is ever introduced it must be visually distinct in **both** themes).
- **Hover:** brightness/shadow shift, `cursor: pointer`. **Focus:** distinct visible focus ring built from CSS variables (`outline`/`box-shadow`) for keyboard navigation. **Active:** `transform: scale(0.97)`.
- **Loading:** disables interaction and double-clicks, swaps the label for a CSS spinner (or animated Google icon) with a **fixed min-width so button dimensions never distort**.
- **Disabled:** `opacity: 0.5`, greyscale, `cursor: not-allowed`. **Success/Error:** temporary feedback styles driven by `--text-success` / `--text-error` (icon + text, never color alone).

### **4.2 Cards**
- **Default:** flexible Flexbox layout, `--bg-secondary` fill, `--border-default` border, `--radius-md`, `--shadow-sm`.
- **Hover:** elevation shift + `translateY(-2px)`. **Focus-within:** card border highlights when a child link/button receives focus.
- **Loading (skeleton):** define a shimmer keyframe class for future async content so no layout jump occurs. **Empty state:** structured fallback layout with a Google icon and clear guidance text.

### **4.3 Forms & Inputs**
- Structure: flex `.input-group` wrapping a `<label>`, the input, and a dedicated error feedback container (`aria-live="polite"`).
- **States required:** empty, focused (outline ring from variables), filled, valid (success border + check icon), invalid (error border, error text, error icon — never color-only), disabled, read-only.

### **4.4 Accordion (FAQ)**
- Each item: a `<button>` with `aria-expanded` and `aria-controls`, paired panel with `role="region"` + `aria-labelledby`; chevron Material icon rotates on toggle; height animates via CSS transition (e.g., `grid-template-rows` or `max-height`); full keyboard operation; panels' hidden state never removes content from the DOM at load.

### **4.5 Toggles**
- Theme toggle and billing switch must both expose correct `aria-pressed`/`aria-checked`, visible focus rings, label text or `aria-label`, and animated thumb/knob transitions using the standard motion tokens.

### **4.6 Modal / Popup (conditional)**
- No modal is required by this landing page. If any overlay is introduced anyway, it must implement: opening/open/loading/success/closing states animated via CSS transitions, a centered flex container (`align-items: center`) with backdrop overlay, a Google icon close button, keyboard focus trapping, and closing via `Esc` or overlay click, layered at `--z-modal`.

---

## 5. CORE UX & MICRO-INTERACTION RULES

- **Responsive by default:** fluid sizing via `clamp()`, breakpoints without horizontal overflow, grids collapse gracefully, touch targets preserved on mobile.
- **Smooth animations:** `transition: var(--transition-normal) var(--ease-standard)` on all state changes; scroll-triggered entrance reveals via IntersectionObserver adding a `.is-visible` class — with a no-JS guarantee (content fully visible when JS is absent) and full respect for `prefers-reduced-motion` (disable drift, lift, and shimmer transforms; keep instant state changes).
- **Accessibility (a11y):** WCAG AA contrast in **both** light and dark modes; never rely on color alone to communicate state (pair icons/text with color); semantic HTML5 elements throughout; correct ARIA roles/labels on the nav disclosure, accordion, switches, and theme toggle; logical DOM/focus order; full keyboard operability with no mouse-only interactions; `aria-live` regions for form errors, pricing announcements, and loading feedback; visible `:focus-visible` styles everywhere.
- **Mandatory visual feedback:** every click, hover, and submission triggers a visible state change.
- **Destructive actions:** none exist in this page, but the generic `.btn-danger` rule (§4.1) must be defined and legible in both themes.

---

## 6. DELIVERABLE & OUTPUT FORMAT

- **Files:** separate `index.html`, `style.css`, and `script.js`. No inline `<script>` blocks beyond a single deferred entry-point reference (`<script src="script.js" defer></script>`). Zero inline styles, zero inline SVGs, zero local/external image files.
- **Naming:** BEM consistently across HTML and CSS; all class names, variables, and file names in English/ASCII.
- **JavaScript scope (all progressive enhancement, contained in `script.js`):** theme toggle + `localStorage` persistence + `prefers-color-scheme` fallback; mobile nav disclosure; FAQ accordion; pricing billing toggle with `aria-live` announcement; CTA form validation with loading → success/error states; IntersectionObserver reveals with `.js` class guard and reduced-motion fallback.
- **Copy:** author **all** user-facing copy in English, in the scientific CHROMA LAB voice, using the anchor headlines from §3 — no lorem ipsum anywhere. Placeholders (`#` hrefs) are permitted only for genuinely unspecified link targets in the footer.
- **First-attempt completeness:** deliver the full page — every section from §3, every component state from §4, both themes from §1.3 — in one response. Nothing may be deferred to a follow-up.
