## 0. DESIGN BRIEF — SWISS MODERNISM 2.0

**Style:** Grid-Based, Typographic, Functional, Modern. 1950s Swiss International Style executed with 2020s CSS.
**Keywords:** Grid system, modular, asymmetric, international style, rational, clean, mathematical spacing.

**Non-negotiable aesthetic laws:**

* **The grid is the design.** Every section is laid out on a strict 12-column grid (`display: grid; grid-template-columns: repeat(12, 1fr); gap: 1rem;`).
* **Typography is the interface.** Oversized display headlines, tight leading (0.95–1.05 on display sizes), uppercase micro-labels with wide tracking (≥ 0.12em), weight contrast 400 vs 700/800.
* **Mathematical spacing.** 8px base unit. Every margin, padding, and gap is a multiple of 8px (4px allowed for micro-adjustments only).
* **Asymmetric balance.** Never center everything. Offset content across columns; whitespace is a structural material, not leftover space.
* **Flat and honest.** No gradients, no glassmorphism, no decorative shadows. Hairline 1px borders and pure color blocks carry the design. Sharp corners everywhere.
* **Single accent.** Exactly one vibrant accent hue (Swiss red, defined below). Tonal variants of that same hue are permitted only for hover and WCAG-compliant text usage. No second accent color, ever.
* **Copy tone:** Short, declarative, factual English sentences. No hype adjectives.

## 1. STRICT RULES & ARCHITECTURE

### **1.1 CSS-First Architecture & Zero Inline CSS**

* All styling lives exclusively in `style.css`. **The `style="..."` attribute is forbidden anywhere in the HTML.**
* All layout, design properties, and states are applied via class or ID selectors only.
* HTML must remain semantic and styling-agnostic (`header`, `nav`, `main`, `section`, `article`, `footer`) — classes are hooks only. Changing the theme must never require touching markup.

### **1.2 CSS Variables & Theme Tokens**

Define all tokens in `:root` (light) and override under `html[data-theme="dark"]`. **Do not alter these hex values without re-verifying WCAG AA (4.5:1 body text).**

```css
:root { /* LIGHT */
  --primary: #000000;
  --secondary: #F5F5F5;
  --accent: #E10600;        /* fills, markers, large UI elements */
  --accent-strong: #B80500; /* accent used as text or hover fill (AA on light bg) */
  --on-accent: #FFFFFF;     /* text on accent fills (5.0:1) */
  --bg-primary: #F5F5F5;    /* page canvas */
  --bg-secondary: #FEFEFE; /* cards, surfaces (never #ffffff) */
  --text-primary: #000000;
  --text-secondary: #4A4A4A;
  --text-success: #1A7F37;
  --text-error: #B42318;
  --border-default: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.15);
  --border-error: #B42318;
  --border-success: #1A7F37;
  --radius-sm: 0; --radius-md: 0; --radius-lg: 0;   /* sharp corners are mandatory */
  --shadow-sm: 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.06);           /* borders preferred over shadows */
  --shadow-md: 0 24px 64px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.32);     /* modal/toast elevation only */
  --spacing-gap: 1rem;
  --space-1: .5rem; --space-2: 1rem; --space-3: 1.5rem; --space-4: 2rem;
  --space-6: 3rem; --space-8: 4rem; --space-12: 6rem; --space-16: 8rem;
  --transition-fast: 120ms; --transition-normal: 240ms;
  --ease-standard: cubic-bezier(0.2, 0, 0, 1);      /* rational, no bounce */
  --z-dropdown: 10; --z-header: 30; --z-modal: 100; --z-toast: 200;
  --font-base: 'Inter', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;
}
html[data-theme="dark"] { /* DARK */
  --primary: #FFFFFF;
  --secondary: #141414;
  --accent: #E10600;
  --accent-strong: #FF3B30; /* AA accent text on black */
  --on-accent: #FFFFFF;
  --bg-primary: #000000;
  --bg-secondary: #141414;
  --text-primary: #FFFFFF;
  --text-secondary: #A3A3A3;
  --text-success: #4ADE80;
  --text-error: #F97066;
  --border-default: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.16);
  --border-error: #F97066;
  --border-success: #4ADE80;
}
```

* **Contrast pairing (enforced in both themes):** light backgrounds (`#F5F5F5` / `#FEFEFE`) pair only with dark text; dark backgrounds (`#000000` / `#141414`) pair only with light text.
* **Type scale (mathematical, in tokens):** `--text-xs: .75rem; --text-sm: .875rem; --text-base: 1rem; --text-lg: 1.25rem; --text-xl: 1.5rem; --text-2xl: 2rem; --text-3xl: 2.5rem; --text-4xl: 3rem;` Display headlines use `clamp()`, e.g. hero: `clamp(2.5rem, 6vw + 1rem, 4.75rem)`, weight 800, `letter-spacing: -0.02em`, `line-height: 0.98`.

### **1.3 Mandatory Dark Mode**

* Dark tokens must be defined both under `html[data-theme="dark"]` **and** `@media (prefers-color-scheme: dark)` (media query applies only when no explicit `data-theme` is set). Switching themes must change variables only — zero HTML restructuring.
* A visible theme toggle lives in the header: Google Material Symbols `dark_mode` / `light_mode` icon, `aria-pressed` reflecting state, dynamic `aria-label` (“Switch to dark mode” / “Switch to light mode”), 44×44px target.
* `script.js` persists choice in `localStorage` (key `theme`); first visit falls back to `prefers-color-scheme`. Apply `data-theme` on `<html>` before first meaningful paint.

### **1.4 Layout System — 12-Column Grid + Flexbox Internals**

* **Grid Exception Clause:** *This theme mandates CSS Grid for macro-layout; the general flexbox macro-layout rule is waived for page/section structure only.* All **component-internal** alignment (buttons, nav rows, form rows, icon+label pairs, card headers, footer bars) must still use Flexbox and must default to `align-items: center` unless an exception is explicitly justified in a CSS comment.
* Global container: `max-width: 80rem; margin-inline: auto; padding-inline: clamp(1rem, 4vw, 2rem);` with `repeat(12, 1fr)` columns and `gap: var(--spacing-gap)`.
* **Mobile-first:** base styles are single-column stacked; enhance upward via `min-width` breakpoints (480 / 640 / 768 / 1024 / 1280px). **No horizontal scrolling at any viewport from 320px up** — fix the layout, never band-aid with `overflow-x: hidden`.

### **1.5 Framework & Naming**

* Use clean, hand-written modern CSS in `style.css` (no build step, no external CSS/JS libraries). Tailwind is not required for this build; if used at all, utilities must map back to the tokens and generic classes above.
* Reusable component classes: `.btn`, `.card`, `.input-group`, `.grid-12`, `.section`, `.section__label`, `.modal`, `.toast`. **BEM only** (`block__element--modifier`) — never mix conventions.

### **1.6 Typography & Icons (Google Fonts Mandatory)**

* Fonts: `<link rel="preconnect" href="https://fonts.googleapis.com">` + `<link rel="preconnect" href="https://fonts.gstatic.com" crossorigin>` + Inter (400;500;700;800) via Google Fonts, bound to `--font-base`. Helvetica appears only as a system fallback.
* Icons: Google **Material Symbols Outlined** via the official stylesheet. Render as `<span class="material-symbols-outlined" aria-hidden="true">check</span>`, sized 20/24px, `color: currentColor`. **Raw inline SVGs, local icon files, and emoji icons are forbidden.** Icons are used sparingly and functionally — Swiss restraint.

## 2. COMPONENT DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS

### **2.1 Buttons (`.btn`)**

* **Base:** `display: flex; align-items: center; justify-content: center; gap: 0.5rem;` min-height 44px, padding `0 1.5rem`, weight 700, square corners. Variants: `.btn--primary` (fill `--primary`, text inverse), `.btn--accent` (fill `--accent`, text `--on-accent`), `.btn--outline` (1px `--border-default`, text `--text-primary`).
* **Hover:** fill shifts (`--primary` → `--accent-strong`, or `--accent` → `--accent-strong`), `cursor: pointer`, `transition: var(--transition-fast)`.
* **Focus:** visible `:focus-visible` ring — `outline: 2px solid var(--accent); outline-offset: 2px` — distinct in both themes.
* **Active:** `transform: scale(0.97)`.
* **Loading (`.btn--loading`):** `pointer-events: none`, `aria-busy="true"`, CSS border spinner (uses `currentColor`) that replaces the leading icon without changing button dimensions; JS must prevent double activation.
* **Disabled (`.btn--disabled` / `[disabled]`):** `opacity: 0.5`, desaturated, `cursor: not-allowed`, no hover transform.
* **Success/Error:** `.btn--success` / `.btn--error` temporary feedback states driven by `--text-success` / `--text-error`.
* **Danger (`.btn--danger`):** outlined only — 1px `--border-error` + `--text-error` + Material `warning` icon — never solid fill, so it never competes with accent CTAs. Must be clearly distinct in both themes.

### **2.2 Cards (`.card`)**

* **Base:** `background: var(--bg-secondary); border: 1px solid var(--border-default); border-radius: 0; padding: var(--space-4);` flexible Flexbox internals, `align-items: flex-start` for text stacks (justified exception to the center rule — content is top-aligned editorially).
* **Hover (`.card--interactive`):** `border-color: var(--accent)` plus `transform: translateY(-2px)`.
* **Focus-within:** border turns `--accent` when any child link/button is focused.
* **Loading skeleton (`.card--skeleton`):** shimmer **must use an opacity pulse keyframe (0.55 → 1), not a gradient** — this theme forbids gradients. Skeleton blocks must match final dimensions to prevent layout shift.
* **Empty state (`.empty-state`):** Material icon + one line of guidance text, hairline-bordered, defined in CSS even if unused.

### **2.3 Forms & Inputs (`.input-group`)**

* **Structure:** Flex column — `label` (14px, weight 500), `input`, dedicated error container `.input-group__error`. Explicit exception: `align-items: stretch` (labels must sit above full-width fields).
* **States — all styled:** empty; `:focus` (2px accent ring via `box-shadow`); filled; valid (1px `--border-success` + Material `check` icon); invalid (1px `--border-error`, `aria-invalid="true"`, red error text **plus icon — never color alone**); disabled; read-only.
* **Feedback:** error and success messages render inside an `aria-live="polite"` region; associate via `aria-describedby`; JS validates email format on submit and on blur-after-touch.

### **2.4 Modal (`.modal`)**

* Triggered by the hero primary CTA and the featured pricing CTA (“Request early access”). Use the native `<dialog>` element with `showModal()`; style `::backdrop` as `rgba(0,0,0,0.6)`; center via a Flex wrapper with `align-items: center; justify-content: center`.
* **States:** opening (fade + subtle `translateY(8px)` → 0), open, loading (submit button enters `.btn--loading`), success (Material `check_circle` in `--text-success` + confirmation copy), error (inline `aria-live` message), closing (reverse transition before `close()`).
* **UX:** close button = Material `close` icon, 44×44px target, `aria-label="Close dialog"`; close on `Esc` and backdrop click; trap focus natively; restore focus to the triggering button on close; lock body scroll while open; `aria-labelledby` pointing at the dialog title.

### **2.5 Landing Page Section Map (12-column placement)**

Global: each content section gets a numbered micro-label — `01 Features`, `02 How it works`, `03 Testimonials`, `04 Pricing`, `05 FAQ`, `06 Get started` — 12px uppercase, `letter-spacing: 0.12em`, `color: var(--accent-strong)`, above a 1px hairline rule. Section padding: `clamp(4rem, 8vw, 6rem)` block. Anchored sections need `scroll-margin-top: 5rem` (sticky header offset).

* **Header (sticky):** wordmark on cols 1–3; nav links (Features, How it works, Pricing, FAQ) cols 7–10; theme toggle + primary CTA cols 11–12. Solid `--bg-primary`, 1px bottom border, `z-index: var(--z-header)`. Below 768px: hamburger (Material `menu`) toggling the nav — `aria-expanded`, `aria-controls`, animated open/close, closes on link click and `Esc`.
* **Hero:** asymmetric, left-weighted. H1 spans cols 1–7 at display size. Supporting paragraph cols 1–5, `--text-secondary`, `max-width: 34rem`. CTA row (Flex, `align-items: center`, `gap: 1rem`): `.btn--accent` + `.btn--outline`. Cols 9–12: a **pure-CSS decorative composition** (hairline modular cells with exactly one `--accent` block and an oversized outlined numeral), `aria-hidden="true"` — no images, no SVG.
* **Features (01):** three `.card--interactive` blocks, each spanning 4 columns (1–4, 5–8, 9–12); below 1024px stack full-width. Card anatomy: Material icon (accent), micro-tag `F.01`, h3 (`--text-lg`, 700), body (`--text-sm`, secondary), text link “Learn more”. Asymmetry comes from the section header: label on cols 1–4, intro paragraph on cols 8–12.
* **How It Works (02):** three steps spanning 4 columns each; oversized numerals `01 / 02 / 03` (`--text-4xl`, weight 800; numeral `02` in `--accent`), connected by a continuous 1px rule across the top. Each step: h3 + one short paragraph. Mobile: vertical stack with a left hairline rule.
* **Testimonials (03):** one featured quote spanning cols 1–7 (quote at `--text-xl`, weight 500, 2px `--accent` left border), plus two secondary quotes stacked on cols 8–12 (`--text-base`). Each: quote, name (700), role/company (`--text-sm`, secondary), and a square monogram tile (48px, fill `--primary`, initials in inverse text) instead of photos.
* **Pricing (04):** three tiers spanning 4 columns each, equal height (`align-items: stretch`). Middle tier: 2px `--accent` border + “Most popular” micro-label tab (accent fill, `--on-accent` text) + CTA `.btn--accent`; side tiers: hairline border + `.btn--outline`. Anatomy: tier name, price in tabular numerals, period, 3–4 features each with Material `check` (accent), fine print (`--text-xs`, secondary). Concrete prices (e.g., $0 / $12 per user / mo / $24 per user / mo).
* **FAQ (05):** accordion spanning cols 3–10. Each item: `<button aria-expanded aria-controls>` + panel (`role="region"`, `aria-labelledby`), Material `add` icon rotating 45° when open; animate with the CSS `grid-template-rows: 0fr → 1fr` technique (no JS height math); one-open-at-a-time via JS; 1px dividers between items; full keyboard operability.
* **Final CTA (06):** full-bleed inverted band — light mode: `#000000` fill, `#FFFFFF` text; dark mode: `#FEFEFE` fill, `#000000` text (contrast pairing maintained). Contains display-size h2 (cols 1–8), one supporting line, and an email capture `.input-group` rendered as an inline Flex row (input + `.btn--accent` submit, `gap: 0.5rem`, `align-items: center`; stacks below 640px). Submit: loading → inline success message + `.toast`; validation errors per §2.3. Small privacy microcopy beneath.
* **Footer:** 1px top border, `--bg-secondary`. Cols 1–4: wordmark + one-line tagline + small monogram. Cols 5–12: three secondary link lists (Product / Company / Resources — real link labels, `href="#"`). Bottom bar: Flex row, `justify-content: space-between; align-items: center` — © year, legal links, “Back to top” link. Links: `--text-secondary`, hover underline in `--accent-strong`.

## 3. CORE UX & MICRO-INTERACTION RULES

* **Responsive by default:** fluid type via `clamp()`, no horizontal overflow from 320px up.
* **Smooth animations:** every state change transitions with `var(--transition-fast)` / `var(--transition-normal)` and `var(--ease-standard)`. No bounce easing.
* **Reduced motion:** under `@media (prefers-reduced-motion: reduce)`, disable transforms, spinner rotation, and smooth scrolling; retain instant color/state changes.
* **Accessibility:** WCAG AA contrast in **both** modes (token pairs above are pre-verified — do not weaken them). Never rely on color alone — pair every error/success with an icon and text. Semantic landmarks, a visible “Skip to main content” skip link, each `<section>` labelled via `aria-labelledby`, logical DOM/focus order, full keyboard operability for menu/accordion/modal/toggle/theme switch, `aria-live="polite"` for form feedback and toasts, always-visible `:focus-visible` styles, ≥44px touch targets.
* **Mandatory visual feedback:** every hover, focus, click, and submission produces a visible state change. Body links underline on hover.
* **Destructive/distinct actions:** follow the `.btn--danger` spec in §2.1 — distinct in both themes.

---

## 4. DELIVERABLE & OUTPUT FORMAT

* **Files:** exactly three — `index.html`, `style.css`, `script.js`. HTML references `script.js` once via `<script src="script.js" defer></script>`; **no inline `<script>` blocks and no inline styles anywhere**. No external JS libraries.
* **style.css organization:** comment-banner sections in order — Tokens → Base/Reset → Layout (`.grid-12`, `.section`) → Components (`.btn`, `.card`, `.input-group`, `.modal`, `.toast`) → Sections → Utilities. BEM naming only, consistent throughout.
* **script.js scope:** theme manager (localStorage + `prefers-color-scheme` + toggle `aria-pressed`), mobile nav, FAQ accordion, `<dialog>` open/close + focus restoration, form validation, simulated async submit (loading → success/error), toast helper. No console errors.
* **Copy:** no lorem ipsum and no placeholder filler. Invent one coherent minimal product identity (e.g., a modular workspace/tool — suggested wordmarks: “RASTER”, “Kern”, “Modul”) and write real, concise, Swiss-toned English copy for every heading, card, step, quote, tier, FAQ answer, and CTA. All class names, variables, and file names remain ASCII/English.
* **Pre-submission self-check (must pass all):** (1) zero `style=` attributes; (2) dark mode toggles and persists across reload; (3) first-visit respects OS preference; (4) 320px viewport — no horizontal scroll; (5) Tab through entire page — every control reachable and visibly focused; (6) `Esc` closes modal and mobile nav; (7) invalid email shows icon + text error in an `aria-live` region; (8) loading button blocks double-clicks; (9) both themes pass AA on all text; (10) single accent hue only, no gradients, sharp corners everywhere.
