# SYSTEM PROMPT — CODING AI BUILD TASK: "ANSI / BBS ART" LANDING PAGE (SINGLE ATTEMPT)

**Role:** Act as a Senior Frontend Engineer and Expert UI Designer. Build the complete landing page in one attempt: fully styled, fully interactive, production-ready. No scaffolding, no partial output, no follow-up questions.

**Theme:** ANSI / BBS Art — 1980s–90s dial-up BBS era. Classic BBS login/menu splash screens; TheDraw / ACiD / iCE-style ANSI art packs. 16-color ANSI/CP437 block-character mosaics (half-blocks, shading glyphs), saturated primary/neon palette on black, zero color gradients, blocky extended-ASCII double-line box borders, monospaced type only, never anti-aliased.

**Sections (in DOM order):** Nav — Hero — Features (3 cards) — How It Works (3 steps) — Testimonials — Pricing (3 tiers) — FAQ — Final CTA — Footer with secondary links.

**Note:** The source style sheet does not declare light/dark modes — you must implement and validate BOTH themes before publishing.

## 0. PAGE COMPOSITION & CONTENT REQUIREMENTS

**0.1 Global Shell**
- Skip link ("SKIP TO CONTENT"), then `<header>` containing `.nav`: ASCII block logotype + brand name (left), anchor links FEATURES / HOW IT WORKS / TESTIMONIALS / PRICING / FAQ (center), theme toggle button + `.btn--primary` CTA "LOG ON" → `#pricing` (right). Nav wraps gracefully on mobile; never overflows.
- Content wrapper: `.wrap { width: 100%; max-width: 80ch; margin-inline: auto; padding-inline: var(--space-4); }` (80 columns — authentic BBS width).
- Exactly one `<h1>` (Hero). Every `<section>` is named via `aria-labelledby`. Section headers styled as BBS menu banners built from CP437 characters (e.g., `╔═ SYSTEM FEATURES ═╗` or `──[ FEATURES ]──`), decorative parts wrapped in `aria-hidden="true"`.

**0.2 Hero — BBS Splash Screen**
- The hero sits inside a `.crt` panel: `background: #000000` in BOTH themes (embedded CRT screen — the splash art always renders on black).
- Decorative ANSI block-mosaic logotype in a `<pre>` using CP437 glyphs (░ ▒ ▓ █ ▄ ▀ ▌ ▐) with colored spans via dedicated classes (`.fg-red`, `.fg-cyan`, `.fg-yellow`, `.fg-green`, `.fg-magenta`, `.fg-blue`, `.fg-white` mapping to palette tokens). Art is `aria-hidden="true"` (the real `<h1>` carries the name). Max 40 columns; `font-size: clamp()` so it never overflows at 320px.
- Double-line framed welcome panel (`.card` inside `.crt`): "WELCOME, GUEST — NODE 1 OF 4", system stat lines (connect speed, users online, uptime) in `--color-text-muted`, tagline, and a blinking block cursor `▌` (CSS `steps(1)` blink animation).
- CTA row (flex, items-center, wrap): `.btn--primary` "DIAL IN NOW" → `#pricing`; `.btn .btn--ghost` "READ THE FAQ" → `#faq` (transparent bg, `--color-green` text + 1px `--color-green` border).

**0.3 Features — 3 Cards**
- Section header + 3 `.card` items in a flex row (wrap → single column under 48rem). Each card: Google Material Symbol icon, `<h3>` title, descriptive copy (file bases, door games, message relay networks — BBS-authentic topics). Hover elevation shift and `focus-within` highlight per §2.2.

**0.4 How It Works — 3 Steps**
- 3 numbered steps ("01 / 02 / 03" in `--color-yellow`) as framed panels, flex row → column on mobile. Decorative CP437 arrows (`══►`) between steps on wide viewports only (hidden on mobile).

**0.5 Testimonials — 3 Quotes**
- Message-base style cards: "FROM:" line with a magenta BBS handle (e.g., `CRYSTAL_WOLF`, `DIALUP_DANNY`), muted date line, quote body, optional `.badge` (e.g., "USER SINCE 1992").

**0.6 Pricing — 3 Tiers**
- Tiers in BBS voice, e.g., LURKER ($0), USER ($9/MO, featured), SYSOP ($19/MO). Middle tier uses `.card--featured` (yellow border or magenta `.badge` "RECOMMENDED"). Feature lists use Material Symbols `check` (success color) and `close` (error color) — never color alone; icon + text. One CTA button per tier.

**0.7 FAQ — Accordion**
- 5 BBS-flavored Q&As (e.g., "DO I NEED A MODEM?"). Keyboard-operable accordion per §2.5.

**0.8 Final CTA — Newsletter Signup**
- Full-width `.card` framed with `--box-double`: headline + supporting line + `.input-group` (label, email `.input`, dedicated error container with `aria-live="polite"`) + submit `.btn--primary` executing the full state machine in §2.3.

**0.9 Footer — Secondary Links**
- `<footer>` with flex-wrapped `<ul>` of secondary links (About, Documentation, Terms, Privacy, Support, Contact), an ASCII sign-off line (e.g., "SYSOP: KEEP IT DIAL-UP."), and copyright "© 199X–2025 <BRAND> — ALL RIGHTS RESERVED". One brand handle used consistently across the entire page.

## 1. STRICT RULES & ARCHITECTURE

**1.1 CSS-First Architecture & Zero Inline CSS**
- All styling lives in `style.css` only. The `style="..."` attribute is forbidden anywhere in the HTML.
- Class/ID selectors only. HTML remains clean and semantic; restyling must never require markup changes.

**1.2 CSS Variables & Theme Tokens (Binding Design Contract)**
Define the following `:root` block exactly, then extend it — do not rename or remove tokens:

```css
:root {
  /* color */
  --color-bg: #000000; --color-surface: #0a0a0a; --color-surface-2: #1c1c1c;
  --color-text: #c0c0c0; --color-text-muted: #808080;
  --color-primary: #ff5555; --color-accent: #55ffff; --color-yellow: #ffff55;
  --color-green: #55ff55; --color-magenta: #ff55ff; --color-blue: #5555ff;
  --color-white: #ffffff; --color-red-dark: #aa0000;
  /* mandatory alias tokens */
  --primary: var(--color-primary); --secondary: var(--color-accent);
  --bg-primary: var(--color-bg); --bg-secondary: var(--color-surface-2);
  --text-primary: var(--color-text); --text-secondary: var(--color-text-muted);
  --text-success: var(--color-green); --text-error: var(--color-primary);
  --border-default: var(--color-text-muted); --border-error: var(--color-primary); --border-success: var(--color-green);
  /* derived pairing tokens */
  --color-primary-hover: #ff7777; --color-primary-contrast: #000000;
  /* radius — square corners everywhere */
  --radius-sm: 0px; --radius-md: 0px; --radius-lg: 0px; --radius-pill: 0px;
  /* shadow — hard offset only; blur is forbidden */
  --shadow-sm: 2px 2px 0 var(--color-blue); --shadow-md: 4px 4px 0 var(--color-blue);
  --shadow-none: none; --blur-none: 0px;
  /* font */
  --font-base: 'VT323', 'Courier New', monospace;
  --font-sans: var(--font-base); --font-display: var(--font-base); --font-mono: var(--font-base);
  /* text scale */
  --text-xs: 0.75rem; --text-sm: 0.875rem; --text-base: 1rem; --text-lg: 1.125rem;
  --text-xl: 1.375rem; --text-2xl: 1.75rem; --text-3xl: 2.25rem; --text-4xl: 3rem; --text-5xl: 3.75rem;
  /* space (ch-based) */
  --space-1: 1ch; --space-2: 2ch; --space-3: 3ch; --space-4: 4ch; --space-6: 6ch;
  --space-8: 8ch; --space-12: 12ch; --space-16: 16ch; --space-24: 24ch;
  --spacing-gap: var(--space-2);
  /* ease — hard-cut steps only */
  --ease-standard: steps(1, end);
  --transition-fast: 0.05s steps(1, end); --transition-normal: 0.12s steps(1, end);
  /* elevation/stacking */
  --z-dropdown: 100; --z-modal: 1000; --z-toast: 1100;
  /* double-line border + block dither */
  --box-double: 3px double var(--color-accent);
  --shade-block: repeating-linear-gradient(45deg, currentColor 0 1px, transparent 1px 3px);
  --bg-image: none;
}
```

- **Contrast pairing (enforced in BOTH themes):** every light background token pairs with dark text, every dark background token with light text. Bright fills (`#55ff55`, `#ffff55`, `#ff55ff`, `#55ffff`) always pair with `#000000` text; the light page (`#fefefe`) always pairs with `#1a1a1a` text. If one color token serves both fill and text roles, split it into derived tokens rather than compromising contrast.
- **Exception clause:** `linear-gradient`/`repeating-linear-gradient` is permitted ONLY for the `--shade-block` 1px dither pattern. Every other surface is flat solid color — no color gradients anywhere. `--bg-image: none` — no background images.
- **Exception clause (shadows/blur):** the effects list mentions "shadow, blur" — resolve as follows: shadows are hard-edged solid offsets (`--shadow-sm/md`, 0px blur) only; blurred shadows and glows are forbidden (`--blur-none: 0px`).

**1.3 Mandatory Dual Themes (Dark-Native + Light "Paper Terminal")**
- This theme is dark-native, so the black/neon palette lives in the default `:root`. **Structural exception:** the alternate LIGHT theme is defined as a `.light` class on `<html>` overriding the tokens below; on first visit, honor `prefers-color-scheme` (light preference → apply `.light`), then persist the user's choice in `localStorage` on subsequent visits. No HTML restructuring may ever be needed to switch themes.

```css
.light {
  --color-bg: #fefefe;            /* never #ffffff */
  --color-surface: #f2f2f2; --color-surface-2: #e6e6e6;
  --color-text: #1a1a1a; --color-text-muted: #555555;
  --color-primary: #aa0000; --color-accent: #008080; --color-yellow: #6b6b00;
  --color-green: #006600; --color-magenta: #aa00aa; --color-blue: #0000aa;
  --color-white: #1a1a1a;          /* re-pointed: consumed by borders/outlines */
  --color-red-dark: #7a0000;
  --color-primary-hover: #7a0000; --color-primary-contrast: #fefefe;
  --box-double: 3px double var(--color-accent);
}
```

- Light mode is the "paper terminal" (dim half of the CP437 16-color palette on near-white). `.btn` fills become dim colors paired with `#fefefe` text (via `--color-bg`); `.btn--primary` uses `--color-primary-contrast`. Pre-validated pairs — verify all others ≥ 4.5:1 body text, ≥ 3:1 borders/large text before shipping: `#c0c0c0`/`#000000`, `#1a1a1a`/`#fefefe`, `#000000` on all bright fills, `#ffffff` on `#5555ff` and `#0000aa`.
- **Theme-invariant CRT surfaces:** `.crt` (hero), `.input` internals, and nav text (`#ffffff` on `var(--color-blue)`) keep their colors in both themes — they are embedded screens, and their pairings pass contrast in both modes.
- **Toggle control:** visible button in `.nav` with Material Symbol (`dark_mode`/`light_mode` swap), correct `aria-pressed` state (true = light active) and `aria-label` ("Switch to light theme" / "Switch to dark theme"). Apply the stored theme at the very start of `script.js` to minimize flash.

**1.4 Flexbox Layout & Mobile-First Alignment**
- Build every layout container with Flexbox. Default `align-items: center` on all flex containers unless an exception is explicitly justified (allowed exceptions: card body text columns and testimonial quote bodies may use `flex-start`; hero art panels may use `stretch`).
- Mobile-first: card rows and step rows wrap into single columns below 48rem; nav wraps; no horizontal scrolling at any viewport from 320px upward. Fluid `clamp()` sizing for hero art and display type.

**1.5 Framework Default & Tailwind CSS**
- Default to Tailwind CSS (Play CDN) for layout utilities only; every component's visual style lives in BEM classes in `style.css` bound to the CSS variables. Alternatively ship pure custom CSS — but never mix conventions. Component vocabulary: `.nav`, `.btn`, `.btn--primary`, `.btn--ghost`, `.btn--danger`, `.card`, `.input`, `.badge` from the contract below, extended BEM-style (`.card__title`, `.card--featured`, `.input-group__error`).

**1.6 Typography & Icons (Google Fonts Mandatory)**
- **Exception clause (font):** the source spec names 'Perfect DOS VGA 437', which is not on Google Fonts. Since Google Fonts is mandatory, load **VT323** (Google Fonts' CP437-style terminal face) via `<link>` and bind it to `--font-base`. Do NOT load local font files or third-party font CDNs. Fallback: `'Courier New', monospace`. Monospaced type only, everywhere; minimum body size 16px for VT323 legibility.
- **Never anti-aliased:** do NOT apply `-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased`, `-moz-osx-font-smoothing: grayscale`, or any smoothing filters — VT323 must render pixel-crisp.
- **Icons:** Google Material Symbols (Outlined) via `<link>`; raw inline SVGs and local icon files are forbidden. **Exception clause:** decorative CP437/box-drawing characters (░ ▒ ▓ █ ▄ ▀ ═ ║ ╔ ╗ ╚ ╝ ▌ ▐) rendered as text content are typography, not icon assets, and are permitted for ANSI decoration (always `aria-hidden="true"`). Functional icons (theme toggle, check/close marks, error/success indicators, modal close) must be Material Symbols.

## 2. COMPONENT DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS

Adopt these binding base classes verbatim as your foundation:

```css
body { margin: 0; color: var(--color-text); font-family: var(--font-mono); background: var(--color-bg); min-height: 100vh; }
.nav { display: flex; gap: var(--space-4); align-items: center; padding: var(--space-2) var(--space-4); background: var(--color-blue); color: #ffffff; border-bottom: var(--box-double); }
.btn { font: 700 var(--text-sm)/1 var(--font-mono); text-transform: uppercase; color: var(--color-bg); padding: var(--space-2) var(--space-4); border-radius: 0; background: var(--color-green); border: 1px solid var(--color-white); cursor: pointer; }
.btn:hover { background: var(--color-yellow); }
.btn:active { background: var(--color-accent); }
.btn:focus-visible { outline: 2px dashed var(--color-white); outline-offset: 2px; }
.btn[disabled] { opacity: .4; cursor: not-allowed; background: var(--color-surface-2); color: var(--color-text-muted); }
.btn--primary { background: var(--color-primary); color: var(--color-primary-contrast); border: 1px solid var(--color-yellow); }
.btn--primary:hover { background: var(--color-primary-hover); }
.card { background: var(--color-surface); border-radius: 0; padding: var(--space-4); border: var(--box-double); }
.input { width: 100%; box-sizing: border-box; color: #55ff55; font: var(--text-base) var(--font-mono); padding: var(--space-2) var(--space-3); border-radius: 0; background: #000000; border: 1px solid var(--color-text-muted); }
.input::placeholder { color: var(--color-text-muted); }
.input:focus { outline: none; border-color: #55ffff; box-shadow: 0 0 0 1px #55ffff; }
.badge { display: inline-flex; align-items: center; gap: .3em; font-size: var(--text-xs); font-weight: 700; padding: .25em .7em; border-radius: 0; background: var(--color-magenta); color: var(--color-bg); border: 1px solid var(--color-white); }
@media (prefers-reduced-motion: reduce) { .btn { transition: none; } }
```

**Mandatory contract modifications:** `.btn` adds `display: flex; align-items: center; justify-content: center; gap: var(--space-1); min-height: 44px; min-width: 44px;` plus `transition: background-color var(--transition-fast), transform var(--transition-fast);`; `.btn:active` adds `transform: scale(0.97);` (hard snap via steps easing); `.btn[disabled]` adds `filter: grayscale(1);`; `.input` internals stay theme-invariant (black CRT) in both modes.

**2.1 Button Component Requirements** — all states via CSS classes, zero inline styles:
- **Default:** flex layout per contract; minimum 44×44px touch target.
- **Hover:** instant background swap (contract behavior) with `cursor: pointer`.
- **Focus:** distinct dashed ring (contract) — white in dark, `#1a1a1a` in light; always visible on keyboard navigation.
- **Active/Pressed:** `transform: scale(0.97)` hard-snap feedback.
- **Loading (`.is-loading`):** sets `aria-busy="true"`, disables pointer events and prevents double-clicks, renders a rotating Material Symbol (`sync`) via `animation: spin 0.6s steps(8) infinite` WITHOUT changing button dimensions; announce via `aria-live`.
- **Disabled:** contract values (opacity .4, grayscale, `cursor: not-allowed`).
- **Success/Error (`.is-success` / `.is-error`):** temporary feedback driven by `--text-success` / `--text-error` with matching border tokens and a Material Symbol (`check_circle` / `error`) + text label — never color alone; announced in an `aria-live` region.

**2.2 Card Component Requirements** (apply to Features, How It Works, Testimonials, Pricing):
- **Default:** flexbox column layout, `--color-surface` fill, `--box-double` border, square corners.
- **Hover (interactive cards — pricing, features):** swap to `--shadow-md` hard-offset shadow and/or `transform: translateY(-2px)` (instant).
- **Focus-within:** border shifts to `--color-yellow` (dark) / `--color-yellow` light value (olive) when a child link/button receives focus.
- **Loading (Skeleton):** `.card--skeleton` using the `--shade-block` dither with a `steps(2)` opacity pulse; must not cause layout jumps.
- **Empty State:** `.card--empty` — centered flex column, Material Symbol (`inbox`) + clear guidance text.
- **Featured variant:** `.card--featured` for the middle pricing tier (yellow border + `.badge`).

**2.3 Form & Input Requirements (Final CTA newsletter):**
- **Structure:** `.input-group` flex column wrapping a `<label>`, the `.input` field, and a dedicated error-feedback container (`.input-group__error`, `aria-live="polite"`, reserved `min-height` to prevent layout jump).
- **States (all via classes):** empty, focused (contract ring), filled, valid (`--border-success` + `check` Material Symbol), invalid (`--border-error`, error text in `--text-error`, `error` Material Symbol, message in the live region), disabled, read-only.
- **Submit flow (vanilla JS):** prevent default → validate email → invalid: apply error state + announce message; valid: button `.is-loading` (aria-busy, spinner, ~1.2s simulated) → `.is-success` ("ACCESS GRANTED — CHECK YOUR INBOX") with success message announced in the live region and input switched to the valid state.

**2.4 Modal / Popup Requirements (conditional):**
- The page has no required modal. IF you wire the footer Terms/Privacy links to on-page content, it MUST be a modal implementing: opening/open/loading/success-error/closing states animated via CSS transitions (steps easing = hard cut); centered flex container (`align-items: center`); backdrop overlay; Material Symbol close button; keyboard focus trapping; close via `Esc` and overlay click; `role="dialog"` with `aria-modal="true"` and an accessible name. Otherwise, plain anchors are acceptable — do not ship a half-implemented modal.

**2.5 FAQ Accordion Requirements:**
- Either native `<details>/<summary>` or a `button` + region pattern with `aria-expanded` / `aria-controls`. Fully keyboard operable (Enter/Space). Open/close is instantaneous (steps easing) with a visible state indicator swap (e.g., `+` ↔ `−` or Material Symbol `expand_more` rotation — hard snap). First panel open by default; panels styled with `--box-double` framing.

---

## 3. CORE UX & MICRO-INTERACTION RULES

- **Responsive by default:** fluid `clamp()` sizing, flex wrapping, zero horizontal overflow from 320px up.
- **Smooth animations via tokens:** every state change applies `transition: var(--transition-fast)` or `var(--transition-normal)` — with `steps(1, end)` easing this produces authentic instant hard-cut color swaps. Respect `prefers-reduced-motion: reduce`: disable the cursor blink, spinner rotation, and skeleton pulse, and flatten all transitions.
- **Accessibility (a11y):** sufficient contrast in BOTH themes (verify every text/background and border pair — §1.3 ratios). Never rely on color alone — pair every state with an icon and/or text. Semantic HTML5 (`header`, `nav`, `main`, `section`, `article`, `footer`), logical DOM/focus order, full keyboard operability (no mouse-only interactions), visible `:focus-visible` rings everywhere, `aria-live` regions for form errors, success feedback, and loading states.
- **Mandatory visual feedback:** every click, hover, or submission triggers an instant visible state change (color swap, border shift, or press transform).
- **Destructive actions:** `.btn--danger` must be visually distinct in both themes: bright red `#ff5555` fill + `#000000` text (dark theme), `#aa0000` fill + `#fefefe` text (light theme).
- **BBS micro-interaction flavor:** blinking `▌` hero cursor; `steps(8)` icon rotation for loading; `steps(2)` dither pulse for skeletons — all disabled under reduced motion.

---

## 4. DELIVERABLE & OUTPUT FORMAT

**4.1 File Structure**
- Exactly three files: `index.html`, `style.css`, `script.js` (vanilla JS only). Zero `style="..."` attributes. Exactly one `<script src="script.js" defer></script>` reference — no inline script blocks beyond it. Google Fonts (VT323) and Material Symbols loaded via `<link>` in `<head>`. `script.js` scope: theme toggle + persistence + `aria-pressed` sync, FAQ accordion, newsletter validation/state machine, optional modal logic. Nothing else.

**4.2 Naming Convention**
- BEM only (`block__element--modifier`), consistent across HTML, CSS, and JS hooks. Never mix conventions. The contract classes (`.btn`, `.btn--primary`, `.card`, `.input`, `.badge`, `.nav`) are canonical blocks.

**4.3 Copy Requirements**
- ALL user-facing copy in **English**, in an authentic 1980s–90s BBS voice (sysop, nodes, baud rates, door games, file bases, upload/download ratios). Complete, realistic copy for every section, button, testimonial, tier, and FAQ entry — lorem ipsum is forbidden; placeholders are permitted only for genuinely unspecified content (none is expected).

**4.4 Pre-Publication Validation (both themes)**
- Light and dark both pass contrast checks; toggle persists via `localStorage` with `prefers-color-scheme` first-visit fallback; no horizontal scroll at 320px; full keyboard pass (nav, accordion, form, focus order); reduced-motion honored; zero inline styles; single deferred script; every component state in Sections 2.1–2.3 is defined in CSS and demonstrated where interactive (newsletter form runs the complete loading → success/error state machine).
