## PROJECT BRIEF

**Theme Definition**
- **Name:** American Diner Americana · **Type:** Nostalgic, Bold, Playful · **Era:** 1950s Diner
- **Keywords:** diner, retro, 50s, americana, checkerboard, neon, chrome, red

**Color Palette (Light Mode — default tokens)**
- `--bg-primary: #9ED9CC` (diner mint) — always paired with `--text-primary: #111111`
- `--bg-secondary: #FFC1CC` (milkshake pink) — always paired with `--text-primary: #111111`
- `--primary: #E84E45` (diner red) · `--secondary: #E0E0E0` (chrome silver)
- Extended tokens: `--chrome: #E0E0E0`, `--check-black: #111111`, `--check-white: #fefefe`
- `--text-primary: #111111` · `--text-secondary: #3d3d3d` · `--text-success: #1E7A46` · `--text-error: #B3261E`
- `--border-default: #111111` · `--border-error: #B3261E` · `--border-success: #1E7A46`
- **Contrast pairing rule:** every light surface (mint, pink, chrome, `#fefefe`) carries dark `#111111` text; on red `#E84E45` surfaces use `#FFFFFF` only for large bold display text (≥ 18.66px bold) and `#111111` for smaller text. Never place pink text on mint or mint text on pink.

**Mandated Technical CSS (tokenize via classes/variables — never inline)**
- Base surface: `background-color: #9ED9CC; color: #111111;`
- Display font: `font-family: 'Lobster', cursive;`
- Retro frame: `border: 5px double #E84E45;`
- Checkerboard pattern: `background-image: repeating-linear-gradient(45deg, #ccc 25%, transparent 25%, transparent 75%, #ccc 75%, #ccc), repeating-linear-gradient(45deg, #ccc 25%, #fff 25%, #fff 75%, #ccc 75%, #ccc);` — recolor the raw `#ccc`/`#fff` stops to theme tokens (e.g., `var(--check-black)`/`var(--check-white)` or `var(--primary)`/`var(--check-white)`) and control tile scale with `background-size`.

**Signature Visual Effects (all implemented as reusable CSS classes)**
- **Split-screen hero:** mint/pink diagonal or vertical split (`linear-gradient` or `clip-path`); stacks vertically on mobile.
- **Checkerboard borders:** the mandated pattern as a `.checker` utility — divider strips between sections, card top edges, footer top border, hero accent band.
- **Chrome arrow connectors:** glossy metallic gradient `linear-gradient(180deg, #FFFFFF, #E0E0E0 45%, #B8B8B8 55%, #F5F5F5)` on arrow connectors (Material Symbols `arrow_forward` or `clip-path` chevrons) linking the How-It-Works steps; rotate 90° when steps stack on mobile.
- **Neon signage:** headline/badge "sign" panels with layered `text-shadow`/`box-shadow` glows in `--primary` and `--secondary`; optional slow flicker animation, fully disabled under `prefers-reduced-motion`. Glow is decorative only — the text itself must still meet AA contrast.
- **Halftone texture:** subtle dot overlay `radial-gradient(circle, rgba(17,17,17,0.08) 1px, transparent 1.5px)` with `background-size: 12px 12px` on section backgrounds.
- **Glossy metallic rendering:** `.chrome-text` (silver gradient + `background-clip: text`, with a solid `--text-primary` fallback) for select display words; glossy button sheen via `box-shadow: inset 0 1px 0 rgba(255,255,255,0.6)`.

**Typography & Icons**
- `--font-display: 'Lobster', cursive` — logo, section headlines, card titles, big numerals (mandated display face).
- `--font-base: 'Poppins', sans-serif` — body copy, buttons, forms, nav. Never set long-form body text in Lobster.
- Load both via Google Fonts `<link>`. Icons: **Google Material Symbols only** (e.g., `restaurant`, `local_dining`, `icecream`, `coffee`, `star`, `check`, `arrow_forward`, `expand_more`, `close`, `dark_mode`/`light_mode`). Inline SVGs and local icon files are forbidden.

**Required Page Sections (build all; write real English diner copy — no lorem ipsum)**
1. **Sticky Header:** Lobster logo (e.g., "Rosie's Diner"), anchor nav (Features, How It Works, Pricing, FAQ), theme toggle, mobile hamburger menu at `--z-dropdown`.
2. **Hero:** split-screen mint/pink with halftone texture; neon-sign Lobster headline with layered glow; subhead; primary CTA "See the Menu" + chrome CTA "Watch Our Story" (opens modal); "Since 1955" badge; checkerboard divider strip along the bottom edge.
3. **Features — 3 cards:** e.g., "Flame-Grilled Classics", "Hand-Spun Milkshakes", "All-Day Breakfast"; chrome Material icon badge, Lobster title, short copy; hover lift + focus-within highlight.
4. **How It Works — 3 steps:** "Grab a Booth" → "Order at the Counter" → "Dig In"; numbered chrome-gradient badges joined by chrome arrow connectors; flex row on desktop, column with rotated arrows on mobile.
5. **Testimonials:** 3 quote cards, 5-star Material `star` ratings, pink initial avatars, customer name + descriptor; skeleton loading pattern applies.
6. **Pricing — 3 tiers:** e.g., "The Single", "The Double Deck" (featured), "The Grand Slam"; featured tier gets the `5px double` red frame, neon "Most Popular" badge, and elevated scale/shadow; feature lists with Material `check` icons; one `.btn` per tier.
7. **FAQ:** accessible accordion of 4–5 real questions; buttons with `aria-expanded`, rotating `expand_more` chevrons, CSS-animated open/close.
8. **Final CTA:** full-width checkerboard-framed panel, big Lobster headline, email `.input-group` + glossy submit exercising all form states; success confirmation announced via `aria-live`.
9. **Footer:** checkerboard top border; secondary link columns (Menu, About, Locations, Careers, Privacy, Contact); Material Symbols social icons; copyright line.

## 1. STRICT RULES & ARCHITECTURE

**1.1 CSS-First Architecture & Zero Inline CSS**
- All styling lives in `style.css`. The `style="..."` attribute is **forbidden** anywhere in the HTML.
- Every design property, layout rule, and state is targeted via class or ID selectors.
- HTML remains clean, semantic, and style-agnostic — retheming the entire page must require editing `style.css` only, never the markup.

**1.2 CSS Variables & Theme Tokens**
- Define in `:root`: the full palette above plus `--radius-sm: 4px; --radius-md: 8px; --radius-lg: 16px; --shadow-sm; --shadow-md; --shadow-neon; --spacing-gap: 1.5rem; --transition-fast: 150ms; --transition-normal: 300ms; --ease-standard: cubic-bezier(0.4, 0, 0.2, 1); --z-dropdown: 1000; --z-modal: 1050; --z-toast: 1100;`
- Contrast pairing is enforced for **every** theme: light backgrounds ↔ dark text, dark backgrounds ↔ light text.
- Never use pure `#ffffff` as a background — where a near-white is needed, use `#fefefe`.

**1.3 Mandatory Dark Mode Support — "Neon Night" Variant**
- Dark mode **must** be defined under both `@media (prefers-color-scheme: dark)` and a `.dark` class on `<html>`.
- Dark tokens: `--bg-primary: #141414` (chrome black), `--bg-secondary: #1F1F1F`, `--text-primary: #F5F5F5`, `--text-secondary: #C9C9C9`, `--primary: #E84E45` (neon red), `--secondary: #FFC1CC` (neon pink), `--border-default: #E0E0E0`; checkerboard recolors to `#111111`/`#2A2A2A`; neon glow shadows intensify.
- Background and text variables must switch seamlessly with **zero** HTML restructuring.
- Persist the user's choice via `localStorage`, falling back to `prefers-color-scheme` on first visit; render a visible toggle in the sticky header with correct `aria-pressed` and dynamic `aria-label` ("Switch to dark mode" / "Switch to light mode").
- **Exception clause:** the source style specification requested a light-only presentation; dark mode nonetheless remains mandatory and must ship as the "Neon Night" variant above so the neon-signage effects stay coherent after sundown.

**1.4 Flexbox Layout & Mobile-First Alignment**
- Build all layout structures with Flexbox.
- Every flex container **defaults to `align-items: center`** unless an explicitly justified exception is documented in a CSS comment.
- Mobile-first: rows convert to columns at the appropriate breakpoints; no horizontal scrolling from 320px up.

**1.5 Framework Default & CSS Organization**
- Use clean custom CSS in `style.css` (Tailwind CSS is permitted, but only if every utility maps back to the CSS variables or the generic reusable classes below).
- Generic component classes: `.btn` (`.btn--primary`, `.btn--secondary`, `.btn--chrome`, `.btn--danger`, plus state classes `.is-loading`, `.is-disabled`, `.is-success`, `.is-error`), `.card`, `.input-group`, `.checker`, `.chrome-text`, `.neon-sign`, `.halftone`.

**1.6 Typography & Icons (Google Fonts Mandatory)**
- Google Fonts `<link>` for 'Lobster' and 'Poppins', bound to `--font-display` and `--font-base`.
- Google Material Symbols for all icons; raw inline SVGs and local icon files are forbidden.

## 2. COMPONENT DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS

**2.1 Button Component**
- **Default:** `display: flex; align-items: center; justify-content: center; gap: 0.5rem;` minimum touch target 44×44px. `.btn--primary` = glossy diner red with chrome sheen; `.btn--chrome`/`.btn--secondary` = metallic silver gradient with `#111111` text; `.btn--danger` visually distinct in both themes.
- **Hover:** brightness/shadow shift with `cursor: pointer`.
- **Focus:** distinct focus ring built from CSS variables (`outline` + `box-shadow`), clearly visible on mint, pink, and chrome-black backgrounds alike.
- **Active/Pressed:** `transform: scale(0.97)`.
- **Loading:** `.is-loading` disables interaction, prevents double-clicks, and renders a CSS spinner or animated Material icon **without distorting button dimensions**.
- **Disabled:** `opacity: 0.5`, greyscale, `cursor: not-allowed`.
- **Success/Error:** temporary `.is-success` / `.is-error` feedback styles driven by `--text-success` / `--text-error` (used by the Final CTA submit).

**2.2 Card Component** (Features, Pricing tiers, Testimonials)
- **Default:** flexible flexbox layout; standard cards use `--bg-secondary`, subtle `--border-default` border and `--shadow-sm`; featured cards add the `5px double var(--primary)` retro frame.
- **Hover:** elevation shift and/or `transform: translateY(-2px)`.
- **Focus-within:** card border highlights when a child link/button receives focus.
- **Loading (Skeleton):** shimmer animation defined purely in CSS to prevent layout jumps (testimonial area).
- **Empty State:** structured fallback with a Material icon and clear guidance text.

**2.3 Form & Input Requirements** (Final CTA email signup)
- **States:** empty, focused (outline ring), filled, valid (success border + `check_circle` icon), invalid (error border, `--text-error` message, `error` icon), disabled, read-only.
- **Structure:** flex `.input-group` wrapping a `<label>`, the input, and a dedicated error-feedback container with `aria-live="polite"`.
- Validate email format in `script.js`; never rely on color alone — every state pairs color with text and/or icon.

**2.4 Modal / Popup Requirements** (hero "Watch Our Story")
- **States:** opening, open, loading, success/error, closing — all animated via CSS transitions on opacity/transform.
- **UX:** centered flex container (`align-items: center`), backdrop overlay, Material `close` icon button, keyboard focus trap, close via `Esc` and overlay click, `role="dialog"` + `aria-modal="true"`, focus returned to the trigger on close.

## 3. CORE UX & MICRO-INTERACTION RULES

- **Responsive by default:** fluid sizing and breakpoints with zero horizontal overflow.
- **Smooth animations:** `transition: var(--transition-normal)` on all state changes; every animation (neon flicker, shimmer, hover lifts, chevron rotations) respects `prefers-reduced-motion`.
- **Accessibility (a11y):** AA contrast in both Light and Neon Night modes; never color-only state communication; semantic HTML5 (`header`, `nav`, `main`, `section`, `article`, `footer`); correct ARIA roles/labels on the theme toggle, FAQ accordion, and modal; logical DOM/focus order; full keyboard operability; `aria-live` regions for form errors, loading states, and dynamic feedback.
- **Mandatory visual feedback:** every click, hover, and submission triggers a visible state change.
- **Destructive actions:** any `.btn--danger` usage must be visually distinct in both themes.

## 4. DELIVERABLE & OUTPUT FORMAT

- **File structure:** separate `index.html`, `style.css`, and `script.js`. No inline `<script>` blocks beyond a single deferred entry point (`<script src="script.js" defer></script>`). No inline CSS anywhere.
- **Naming convention:** one consistent BEM convention (`block__element--modifier`) across the entire deliverable — never mix conventions.
- **No unrequested placeholders:** all user-facing copy is real, English, diner-themed content for every listed section; placeholders are permitted only where content was genuinely left unspecified.
- **First-attempt completeness:** the page must ship fully functional — all 9 sections, every component state, the dark mode toggle with persistence, and all interactions working as delivered.
